SURAT, GUJARAT : As the Lok Sabha election’s third phase wrapped up in Gujarat, the Income Tax department in Surat sprung into action on Thursday, conducting a significant operation. The Investigation Wing of the Surat Income Tax department descended upon the prominent textile group in Surat and its partner associates engaged in the coal business in Surat and Morbi. With over 150 officers involved, a search and seizure operation spanned more than 13 locations across Surat, unveiling what appears to be massive tax evasion by the textile conglomerate known as the Aishwarya Group.

Simultaneous search and survey operations unfolded at 12 premises in Surat and at Morbi, where the Aishwarya Group has investments in the ceramics sector. Additionally, the owners and partners of the Aishwarya Group are implicated in the coal business. The Income Tax department anticipates unearthing crores of rupees worth of Benami income and spurious transactions. Reportedly, a substantial amount of documents linked to the group’s Benami investments in the coal and ceramics industry, as well as real estate, have been seized by the I-T sleuths.

The Aishwarya Group, a prominent player in the textile sector, has long been under the radar of tax authorities for alleged discrepancies in its financial dealings. The extensive operation marks a significant escalation in the ongoing efforts to enforce fiscal discipline and transparency in business practices.

The implications of the raid extend beyond mere financial scrutiny, potentially impacting the political landscape as well. Coming on the heels of the Lok Sabha elections, the timing of the operation adds a layer of intrigue, prompting speculation about possible political ramifications. The convergence of economic and political interests in Gujarat, a crucial battleground in Indian politics, amplifies the significance of such developments.
