International Drug Smugglers Target Gujarat Post Offices
Drugs are being transported across thousands of kilometers by smugglers using parcels at Gujarat post offices, therefore avoiding traditional border security procedures
Ahmedabad : Post offices across Gujarat seem to be targeted for international drug trafficking operations in a worrying pattern. In the second such event within a month, drugs worth ₹3.50 crores have been seized by the Ahmedabad crime branch from a shipment imported from the United States at the Foreign Post Office. Before it could be delivered, the Ahmedabad crime branch intercepted the package including hybrid and liquid ganja.
This concerning revelation came up during a suspect’s interrogation in a previous drug smuggling case. Since then, the Ahmedabad crime branch has stepped up its probe and conducted further inquiries to find more people engaged in this global drug trafficking network.
In recent times, the Shahibagh Post Office in Ahmedabad revealed a notable amount of drugs. Once limited to inter-city and inter-state activities, drug trafficking has grown to be a global concern. Drugs are being transported across thousands of kilometers by smugglers using parcels at Gujarat post offices, therefore avoiding traditional border security procedures. Under a similar approach, the Shahibagh Post Office intercepted 3.775 kg of drugs valued ₹1.12 crores. Like the recently confiscated package, it had come from overseas.
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch and the Customs Department working together produced the successful interception at the Shahibagh Post Office. After registering a case, the Crime Branch set out to investigate the larger global network behind these smuggling operations.
Another noteworthy seizure on June 20, when the Border Security Force (BSF) found drugs valued ₹150 crores in Kutch, highlights the scope of drug trafficking in Gujarat. During a search operation along the Creek border, the BSF came upon three distinct kinds of narcotics: synthetic substances, heroin, and charas. Nestled in several packs, the pills were discovered abandoned. The BSF has intercepted over 150 packets of narcotics in the previous week, hence this discovery fits a sequence of events.
From the beaches of Abdasa, Lakhpat, and Mandvi in Kutch, drugs valued ₹120.50 crores have been recovered in the past ten days only. Among the seized drugs were 151 charas packets, each weighing one kilogram and worth ₹50 lakhs on the international market. Nine packages of methamphetamine, each worth ₹5 crores per kilogram, also turned up. Authorities think that more illegal narcotics could still be present considering the sea’s water movement patterns.
