Vapi : It has come to light that around eight quarries in the area of the Udwada highway between Vapi and Pardi in the Valsad district are engaging in reckless quarrying practises that pose substantial health and safety threats to the local population.

Without regard for safety rules or environmental considerations, the miners have dug down to the stone and mineral deposits around 150 feet. Worryingly, ongoing digs have reached depths of up to 100 feet below surface.

The destruction caused by mining activities was documented in a picture article published in Divya Bhaskar on July 5. People and cars are dwarfed by the vastness of the quarry pits as seen from above. Hills that were previously unmovable are being ruthlessly hacked and smashed to satisfy the ever-growing need for building materials. But the far-reaching and destructive effects of such actions cannot be overstated.

The effects of these mines on the local populace are enormous. Cracks have appeared in homes within a km of the quarries as a consequence of the constant blasting used to shatter stones. The terrible deaths of so many workers in the mining industry attest to the critical need for immediate action and control. The existence of quarries has also led to a rise in dust, which has negative effects on the health of those living in the area.

Valsad’s district government has remained strangely inert in the face of multiple complaints from worried villagers, failing to take any significant action against the miners. The administration’s capacity to solve the problem has allegedly been hampered by political pressure from the governing BJP government in Gujarat. The consequences on locals and the environment have been made worse by the continued indiscriminate mining that has been permitted to continue due to a lack of enforcement and attention.

Affected residents have responded to the crisis by calling for swift action from government leaders. Authorities have been encouraged to personally assess the damage at the mining sites and meet with impacted locals to get to the bottom of the most urgent problems. Urgent action is required to alleviate the suffering of those who live in close proximity to these quarries.

The district administration of Valsad must put the needs of its inhabitants, including their security, above partisan concerns. Damage from may be reduced if strict rules are enforced, inspections are rigorous, and culprits are brought to justice.
