Surat | Gujarat — After redefining passenger travel with semi-high-speed trains, Indian Railways is now preparing to bring a major transformation to freight transport. The Railway Ministry is gearing up to introduce the Vande Bharat Cargo Freight train, a high-speed logistics solution expected to reshape supply chains across the country.
For industries in South Gujarat, the announcement is being seen as a breakthrough moment. The first route is planned between Mumbai and Delhi—a corridor that directly connects the industrial clusters of Surat, Vapi and Valsad to the country’s biggest markets.
Industry leaders say this could mark the beginning of a logistics revolution.
Built for Speed: 160 kmph Freight Movement
Railway sources confirm that a 16-coach prototype rake is currently under development, with trial runs expected by the end of November under the supervision of the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO).
The train is designed to run at 160 km per hour, a dramatic leap compared to conventional freight trains. Faster transit means shorter delivery times, reduced inventory costs and more reliable supply chains for manufacturers.
“This initiative signals the beginning of a new era in freight mobility,” a senior railway official said. “High-speed cargo will reduce dependence on road transport and improve efficiency across industries.”
Refrigerated Cargo: A Cold-Chain Game Changer
One of the most groundbreaking features of the Vande Bharat Cargo train is its advanced temperature-controlled system.
For the first time, rail freight will offer reliable cold-chain logistics for:
Milk and dairy products
Fruits and fresh vegetables
Seafood exports
Life-saving medicines and vaccines
Pharmaceutical hubs in Vapi and Valsad are expected to benefit significantly, as temperature-sensitive drugs can now reach major markets within hours without risk of spoilage.
“This is a huge boost for pharma and food exporters,” said a Surat-based logistics operator. “Railways are finally offering a reliable cold chain at scale.”
Big Boost for Textile, Diamond and Seafood Exports
South Gujarat’s economy is heavily driven by textiles, diamonds, chemicals and seafood exports. Currently, most shipments depend on road transport, which is slower and more expensive.
With high-speed rail cargo:
Textile shipments from Surat can reach Delhi markets faster
Diamonds and high-value goods gain safer transit
Seafood exports get quicker connectivity to airports and ports
“This train is like a booster dose for exports,” said a textile exporter. “Lower logistics costs will make our products more competitive globally.”
Smart and Safe Logistics with Real-Time Tracking
The train will feature a modular loading system that reduces loading and unloading time. A sensor-based digital monitoring system will allow traders to track cargo in real time, ensuring security and transparency.
Experts believe this combination of speed, safety and technology will significantly reduce logistics costs and increase efficiency.
A Game Changer for South Gujarat’s Economy
By linking major ports with the national capital at high speed, the Vande Bharat Cargo service is expected to accelerate export-import activities and strengthen supply chains.
Industry observers say the project could become a defining chapter in India’s logistics transformation.
“If executed as planned, this will elevate South Gujarat’s economy to new heights,” an industry representative said. “It’s the beginning of high-speed freight in India.”
