Surat | Gujarat — In the bustling, high-stakes lanes of Surat’s Mahidharpura diamond market, millions of dollars change hands with a handshake. It is a place where sparkle usually comes from stones, but this week, the brightest light came from the sheer honesty of its people. If you lose something valuable in the heart of this diamond hub, do not lose hope—chances are, the ethics of the community will bring it back to you intact.

A Heart-Stopping Realization

The story began with Chetanbhai Kirtilal Adani, who had withdrawn a 10-gram gold bar (valued at approximately ₹1.5 lakh) from a safe deposit vault in Mahidharpura. By 8:30 PM, after returning home, a cold realization set in: the gold was gone.

Searching frantically, Chetanbhai initially hoped he had simply misplaced it inside the vault. However, a thorough check the following morning yielded nothing. For two days, the weight of the loss hung heavy, as any hope of recovering a small gold bar in a crowded marketplace usually vanishes into thin air.

A Beacon of Honesty: Dahya Vaghani

Unbeknownst to Chetanbhai, Dahya Dayalbhai Vaghani had spotted the glint of gold in the parking lot of the Shraddhadeep Building. Instead of keeping the find, Dahya Vaghani immediately took action to find the rightful owner.

In a display of proactive sincerity, he printed 10 to 15 notices featuring his mobile number and a simple message: “If you have lost something, contact this number.” He pasted these notices across strategic locations in the Mahidharpura market and near the safe deposit vaults, waiting for the right person to call.

The Verification and Reunion

On the third day, a weary Chetanbhai arrived at “Shri Hari Safe,” where a small piece of paper caught his eye. He dialed the number and reached Dahya Vaghani.

To ensure the item returned to its true owner, Dahya Vaghani and his friend, Ranchod Lavani, conducted a careful verification process at their office. After Chetanbhai provided sufficient proof, the ownership was established. However, wanting to turn this act of individual honesty into a lesson for the community, they decided to return the gold bar through the official channels of the Surat Diamond Association (SDA).

Honored by the Industry

On Monday, January 12, 2026, at 12:00 PM, a ceremony was held at the Surat Diamond Association office. In a room filled with industry leaders, Dahya Dayalbhai Vaghani was honored for his exemplary ethical values.

SDA President Jagdishbhai Khunt, along with Minister Dhirubhai Savani and other dignitaries including Damjibhai Mawani and Corporator Jitubhai Kachhad, presented Vaghani with a shawl and a book as tokens of respect.

“Honesty is the foundation of our trade,” remarked a representative of the Association. “Dahya Vaghani has reminded us all that integrity is more valuable than gold.”
