With monsoon rains exposing gaping craters and an alarming surge in fatal accidents, Valsad District Magistrate Bhavya Verma has unleashed a hard-hitting order under Section 163 of the new Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, demanding immediate repairs to the treacherous stretch of road. Her order explicitly directs the Project Director of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) Surat to compel the responsible road construction contractor to undertake immediate patchwork and comprehensive repairs of the damaged and potholed highway within a stringent 10-day deadline. Crucially, this mandate extends to the equally dilapidated service roads running alongside NH48, which have also become a source of commuter misery.

“We have given a clear indication that carelessness on the road issue will no longer be tolerated,” a senior district official, who preferred anonymity, confirmed. The order leaves no room for ambiguity: “If the prescribed repairs are not completed within the time limit and any accident occurs, then BNSS 2023 will be filed against the concerned agency. Criminal action will be taken under sections 106 and 223.” This threat of criminal prosecution is a significant escalation, signalling the administration’s resolve to hold negligent parties accountable.
