Highway to Hell: Valsad DM Delivers Ultimatum to NHAI Over Killer Potholes

Valsad, Gujarat –  The patience of local authorities has worn thin as the Ahmedabad-Mumbai National Highway 48, a vital artery for commerce and travel, has devolved into a death trap. With monsoon rains exposing gaping craters and an alarming surge in fatal accidents, Valsad District Magistrate Bhavya Verma has unleashed a hard-hitting order under Section 163 of the new Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, demanding immediate repairs to the treacherous stretch of road. This isn’t just a bureaucratic directive; it’s a desperate cry for action in the face of mounting casualties.

“This highway has literally become hell for commuters,” stated a visibly frustrated local resident, Rajendra Patel, whose daily commute has become a perilous gamble. “Every day, we see damaged vehicles, and worse, we hear of more lives lost. It’s a disgrace that authorities let it get this bad.” His sentiment is echoed across the district, where the continuous incidents of accidents and tragic loss of life due to the severely neglected highway have reached a boiling point.

In an unprecedented move, District Magistrate Bhavya Verma has drawn a line in the sand. Her order explicitly directs the Project Director of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) Surat to compel the responsible road construction contractor to undertake immediate patchwork and comprehensive repairs of the damaged and potholed highway within a stringent 10-day deadline. Crucially, this mandate extends to the equally dilapidated service roads running alongside NH48, which have also become a source of commuter misery.

“We have given a clear indication that carelessness on the road issue will no longer be tolerated,” a senior district official, who preferred anonymity, confirmed. The order leaves no room for ambiguity: “If the prescribed repairs are not completed within the time limit and any accident occurs, then BNSS 2023 will be filed against the concerned agency. Criminal action will be taken under sections 106 and 223.” This threat of criminal prosecution is a significant escalation, signalling the administration’s resolve to hold negligent parties accountable.

For too long, citizens have reported the worsening condition of the highway to local government and NHAI, only to be met with inaction. The heavy monsoon rains have exacerbated the problem, transforming minor defects into vehicle-wrecking, accident-inducing chasms. Drivers face constant challenges, from vehicle damage to an alarming increase in accident rates, creating widespread public outcry.

Verma’s unilateral issuance of this order underscores the urgency of the situation. “Without immediate action, the possibility of civilian casualties had increased exponentially,” stated a press release from the District Collectorate. This decisive move is aimed at preventing further loss of innocent lives and restoring a modicum of safety to one of India’s most critical national highways.

The swift and stern directive has ignited a flicker of hope among local citizens, who now anticipate swifter repairs and a safer travel experience. “We hope this order finally pushes them to act,” said homemaker Meena Sharma, whose family frequently uses the highway. “Our lives are at stake.”

The ball is now firmly in the court of the National Highway Authority and its contractors. The coming days will reveal whether this strict directive will finally translate into concrete action, transforming the “highway to hell” back into a safe passage for millions.
