Rajkot : A tragic incident unfolded on Friday morning near Amrutvel village in Savarkundla, Gujarat, as a four-year-old lion was struck and killed by a speeding goods train. The train, en route from Surendranagar to Pipavav port, collided with the young lion, leaving it severely injured. Although the lion managed to move to a nearby field, it succumbed to its wounds shortly after.

Forest department officials, upon receiving the news, reached the scene and took possession of the lion’s body. Investigations into the cause of the accident are underway. Initial estimates suggest the train was traveling at around 50 km per hour at the time of impact.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of wildlife in the region, particularly near railway tracks. Junagadh Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Aradhana Sahu acknowledged these concerns, stating, “An accident occurred in the nearby area while our staff was on patrol. When lion tracks are nearby, we inform the railway department and request reduction in speed, and the same was done yesterday.”

However, this recent incident, coming on the heels of another train-lion collision near Vijapadi village just days ago, highlights the need for more robust measures to prevent such tragedies. The injured lion from the Vijapadi incident is currently receiving treatment at Junagadh Sakkarbaugh Zoo.
