Gandhinagar | Gujarat — Electricity consumers across Gujarat are witnessing a major financial relief as smart meter users under the South Gujarat Electricity Company Limited (DGVCL) are now benefiting from a new Time of Use discount tariff introduced by the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC). The initiative is being hailed as a major step toward smart energy management and consumer savings.

Under the new tariff order implemented from 1 April 2026, all residential, commercial, industrial, street lighting, and electric vehicle charging station consumers with smart meters are receiving a discount of ₹0.60 per unit during specific off-peak hours.

The discount applies for electricity consumed between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm, a six-hour window identified for optimal load management. Officials say the system encourages consumers to shift usage patterns and improve overall energy efficiency.

A senior DGVCL official stated, “This initiative is not only reducing electricity bills but also empowering consumers to actively participate in demand-side energy management through smart technology.”

In the month of April alone, the impact of the scheme has been significant. More than 10,95,466 smart meter consumers collectively saved approximately ₹6.78 crore, marking one of the largest direct benefit transfers through tariff innovation in the state’s power sector.

Officials noted that smart meters, which were earlier introduced primarily for real-time consumption tracking, are now delivering tangible financial benefits. A spokesperson said, “Consumers can now see direct savings reflected in their bills, which is increasing trust and acceptance of smart metering systems.”

The adoption of smart meters is steadily rising across Gujarat as more households and businesses recognize the dual advantage of transparency and cost efficiency. The state power distribution companies believe this will accelerate the transition toward a smarter, more responsive electricity grid.

DGVCL reiterated its commitment to modernizing electricity services and promoting energy efficiency. Officials emphasized that the Time of Use tariff is designed not only to reduce peak load pressure but also to support the broader vision of building a “Smart Gujarat” with sustainable and consumer-friendly energy practices.
