Rajkot : In an era where water scarcity looms as a formidable challenge, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has taken a visionary step by establishing a water management cell, a proactive measure aimed at averting a looming water crisis. This initiative, inspired by the water woes of metropolises like Bangalore, is a testament to RMC’s commitment to sustainability and foresight.

The newly formed cell has hit the ground running, with plans to erect water treatment plants at strategic pumping stations. Initially, two such facilities will mark the beginning of this ambitious project, setting a precedent for future endeavors in water conservation.

Swapnil Khare, the Deputy Commissioner of RMC, sheds light on the pressing need for such measures. “The thirst for drinking water in Rajkot’s burgeoning metropolis grows stronger by the day,” he explains. With limited natural water resources at their disposal, the city’s reliance on the Narmada scheme-based pipeline and the Sauni scheme’s bounty has intensified. Recognizing this, the government has not only prioritized water management but also the crucial aspect of water storage for Rajkot’s future.

For the first time, a dedicated unit comprising 38 skilled engineers has been assembled to navigate these waters. At the helm is City Engineer A. M. Mitra, whose expertise and leadership are pivotal to the mission’s success.

Khare emphasizes Rajkot’s earnest move towards robust water storage solutions. The commencement of the tender process for this project is a clear indicator of the city’s determination to safeguard its water reserves and explore new sources. “The impending water crisis is a battle we are prepared to fight,” he asserts. Moreover, the RMC plans to launch awareness campaigns to enlighten the populace about the significance of water conservation.

City Engineer Alpana Mitra has been entrusted with the chief responsibility of steering the Water Management Unit, in addition to her existing duties. While the timeline for the completion of this undertaking remains uncertain, the impact it promises to have on mitigating Rajkot’s water challenges is undeniable.

As Rajkot sets an example with its proactive approach, it sends a ripple effect across the nation, urging other cities to follow suit. The establishment of the water management cell is not just a measure of prevention but a beacon of hope for a sustainable future.
