Gujarat : ONGC Begins First-Ever Oil and Gas Drilling in Saurashtra
The drilling ring has been installed within a 12-kilometer stretch around Manavadar, Gujarat following detailed surveys conducted in 2023. Experts believe the project could mark the beginning of a new energy chapter for Saurashtra, which has never before been part of India’s oil and gas exploration map.

Junagadh/Manavadar | Gujarat — In a historic move for Gujarat’s energy sector, drilling operations have begun for the first time in Saurashtra to explore potential oil and gas reserves. The ambitious project, led by ONGC’s Cambay Asset, has deployed world-class drilling technology in the Manavadar region.
The drilling ring has been installed within a 12-kilometer stretch around Manavadar, following detailed surveys conducted in 2023. Experts believe the project could mark the beginning of a new energy chapter for Saurashtra, which has never before been part of India’s oil and gas exploration map.
“For the first time in Saurashtra, exploratory well drilling is underway. After the initial survey, we are now using the most advanced drilling technology available globally,” said D.A. Subbaraju, Cambay Asset Manager, ONGC.
Cutting-Edge Drilling in Manavadar
Surveys were earlier conducted across 500 square kilometers in Junagadh, Porbandar, and Rajkot districts. Soil samples were processed in Vadodara, and the results have now led to the second phase — deep exploratory drilling. Using precision machinery, engineers have already reached 4,000 meters (4 kilometers) below the surface.
“Our team of 100 high-class engineers is working 24×7 on this project. We are committed to deploying the world’s best drilling technology to assess the oil and gas potential of this region,” said Drilling Service Head G.C. Singhaji.
Technology and Chemical Analysis
The current phase focuses on advanced chemical analysis of underground samples. This will determine whether oil and gas deposits exist, and if so, in what quantities. The results will decide whether full-scale extraction can begin in the near future.
Experts note that any positive discovery will not only transform the region’s energy profile but also boost local development.
A Chance for Manavadar’s Revival
Manavadar was once called “Manchester” due to its thriving cotton and vegetable ghee industries, which exported goods across the world. However, with the collapse of these industries, the region slipped into economic decline.
“If oil or gas reserves are discovered, it could completely change the fate of Manavadar. The demand for this region will rise, industries will return, and local employment will get a massive boost,” said a senior ONGC official involved in the project.
A Turning Point for Gujarat
Energy experts believe that the success of Saurashtra’s drilling could place Gujarat even more prominently on India’s energy map. Currently, much of India’s oil and gas comes from western offshore fields and Assam, but Saurashtra’s entry into the exploration belt could diversify and strengthen the nation’s energy security.
The coming months will be crucial, as analysis of underground data continues. If oil or gas reserves are confirmed, Saurashtra could soon witness one of its biggest economic transformations in decades.
