GandhinagarIn a bid to safeguard its ranks and expand its base, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has overhauled its membership process, marking a departure from its previous strategy of easy access through missed calls. This time, the Gujarat BJP has introduced stringent checks requiring all new members to provide a reference from an existing party official—a measure aimed at preventing opposition members from infiltrating its ranks.

The BJP’s new approach comes as part of a large-scale membership drive aimed at enrolling over two crore new members in Gujarat, a crucial step for the party as it gears up for the 2027 assembly elections and local municipal and panchayat polls. With the total number of voters in the state estimated at 4.80 crore, the BJP’s focus is clear: secure a majority to dominate future elections.

The missed call membership model, once hailed as a masterstroke of grassroots mobilization, had also made the party vulnerable. Allegations surfaced that members of the Congress and other opposition parties could easily join, raising concerns about the integrity of the membership rolls. To counter this, the BJP has mandated that new members be vouched for by current office bearers—be it MPs, MLAs, councillors, or district and taluka panchayat members—ensuring a tighter, more accountable process.

In a display of the party’s ambitious outreach, the BJP has set aggressive targets for its representatives: each MP must bring in 10,000 new members, while MLAs are tasked with enrolling 5,000 each by October 15. Local leaders, including councillors and panchayat members, have their own goals to meet, underscoring the all-hands-on-deck nature of the campaign.

For the BJP, the stakes are high. In the last state elections, the party secured 1.88 crore votes—a significant number, but not enough to rest easy. As it looks toward future battles, from local body elections to the 2027 assembly contest, the party’s leadership knows that a robust and loyal membership base is critical. By tightening its membership process, the BJP is not only aiming to expand its influence but also fortify its ranks against any attempts at subversion.

This renewed membership push is not just about numbers; it’s about building a disciplined, committed army of supporters who will stand by the party as it navigates the challenges of future elections. For the BJP, this campaign is more than a recruitment drive—it’s a battle for the heart of Gujarat’s electorate.
