Ahmedabad | Gujarat — In a dramatic turn of events, the Ahmedabad Rural Court has issued an arrest warrant against BJP MLA Hardik Patel in connection with a 2018 Patidar agitation case. The warrant comes after BJP MLA Hardik Patel repeatedly failed to appear before the court during hearings, even as he was present inside the Gujarat Assembly on Wednesday, raising questions during the Question Hour.

The case dates back to the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) agitation in the Nikol area of Ahmedabad, where Hardik Patel and other PAAS leaders were booked under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including unlawful assembly, rioting, criminal conspiracy, assault on public servants, and intimidation.

Charges from the 2018 Agitation

In 2018, Patel and fellow leaders organized a symbolic fast in Nikol, demanding reservation for Patidars and a waiver of farmers’ debts. According to the police complaint, the protestors took out a rally without permission, violating prohibitory orders issued by the city police commissioner.

The rally escalated into confrontation when police attempted to stop it. The FIR alleged that Patel and his associates abused and threatened police officials, creating law-and-order disturbances. The case was filed under IPC Sections 143, 147, 149, 353, 188, 186, 120, 294, 34, and 506.

The matter is currently at the charge-frame stage, but Patel’s continued absence in court proceedings has now prompted the judicial order for his arrest.

Political Storm Brews

The timing of the arrest warrant has sparked political buzz. While the Assembly session is underway, Patel has remained active in legislative debates. Legal experts point out that Patel can cite his Assembly presence as a reason for missing hearings, but the court’s action signals a hardening stance.

Speaking informally to media persons, a senior Congress leader remarked, “The case shows how the Patidar agitation continues to haunt leaders who emerged from the movement. Hardik Patel must now balance his political career with long-pending legal battles.”

Hardik Patel’s Journey from Agitator to MLA

Once the face of the Patidar reservation movement, Hardik Patel’s trajectory from being a fiery agitator to becoming the BJP MLA from Viramgam has been both controversial and symbolic. His defection from the Congress to the BJP and subsequent rise in state politics has drawn sharp criticism from former allies.

However, this latest legal development puts Patel back in the spotlight — not as a legislator, but as an accused facing serious charges from his activist past.
