Bhuj | Gujarat — Bhuj is set to witness a rare and historic moment on Tuesday as the Hamirsar Lake overflowed for the fourth consecutive year, triggering a public holiday in all government offices, schools, and banks. While no state-wide holiday has been declared, Bhuj remains the only town in India where such a unique tradition is observed.
For the people of Bhuj, the overflowing of Hamirsar Lake is not just a natural occurrence—it is a deeply symbolic and emotional event that reflects centuries-old traditions.
“When Hamirsar overflows, it feels like the town itself comes alive. It’s not just water; it’s hope, blessings, and celebration,” said Ramesh Vekariya, a long-time resident who joined hundreds of others at the lakeside to witness the overflowing waters.
Holiday Declared Across Bhuj
The overflowing of Hamirsar Lake has once again brought smiles and festive cheer. As per tradition, the local administration has declared a public holiday for all government offices, schools, and banks in Bhuj. Businesses, too, are expected to remain shut voluntarily as people gather around the 28-acre water body to take part in the celebrations.
Gujarat is the only state in India where the overflowing of a lake leads to an official public holiday, a tradition unique to Bhuj.
Blessing Ceremony Tomorrow
To mark the occasion, the head of Bhuj Municipality will perform a scriptural ritual to bless the lake, an age-old practice that locals believe ensures prosperity and harmony for the town. Preparations are already underway for the ritual, which will take place on Wednesday morning.
“This lake has sustained Bhuj for centuries. Blessing Hamirsar is not just a ritual; it’s our way of expressing gratitude,” said municipal chief officer Hitesh Chauhan.
Historic Significance of Hamirsar Lake
Built more than 450 years ago, Hamirsar Lake was constructed during the reign of Rao Khengarji I and named after his father, Rao Hamirji. It was further developed under Pragmalji II and later during the reign of Khengarji III under the guidance of renowned architect Jairam Ruda Gajdhar.
Spread across 28 acres, the lake continues to quench the thirst of thousands of citizens in Bhuj while standing as a testament to the town’s rich history.
Overflow Sparks Joy Across Kutch
This year’s heavy rainfall has replenished several reservoirs across Gujarat, but the sight of Hamirsar’s overflow holds a special charm. Locals and tourists alike thronged the banks, capturing photos and participating in spontaneous celebrations.
“The overflowing of Hamirsar is a festival in itself. It unites us all—young and old, rich and poor—around a shared heritage,” said social worker Anjali Desai.
A Festival of Water and Community
For Bhujis, the overflowing Hamirsar is more than just a seasonal event. It is a reaffirmation of their resilience and cultural pride. As chants, folk songs, and community prayers echoed across the town, one truth was evident: Hamirsar is not just a lake, but the lifeline and soul of Bhuj.
