RAJKOT,GUJARAT : Rajkot City Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staged a protest on Friday at Corporation Chowk, demanding that the municipal authorities provide proper time for traders to comply with fire safety regulations and take action against municipal properties lacking fire No Objection Certificates (NOCs). The protest escalated, resulting in the detention of around 20 AAP leaders and activists by the police.

The protest follows a proposal submitted by AAP to the Rajkot Municipal Corporation. The proposal highlighted the need for adequate notice and fair treatment for traders regarding fire safety compliance. It also called for strict action against the municipality’s own properties that lack fire safety systems.

Rajkot AAP party President stated that the protest was triggered by the fire incident at TRP Gamezone on May 25, 2024. This incident prompted the High Court to suo moto order the sealing of various properties, including community halls, gardens, tuition classes, schools, colleges, and commercial buildings in Rajkot city. AAP contends that the Rajkot Municipal Corporation has been sealing properties arbitrarily without giving owners a chance to present documentary evidence or comply with regulations.

“We demand that appropriate time be given to traders and property owners in such situations,” said the AAP President. He also emphasized the need for accountability among public servants. “Corporators, the mayor, standing committee chairman, departmental chairpersons, parliament members, MLAs, and commissioners—all these officials are public servants receiving salaries and benefits from public tax money. Action should be taken against them where mistakes are found, and exemplary punishment should be given.”

The protesters also alleged that many municipal properties, including offices in the East Zone, West Zone, and Central Zone, as well as Health Centers and Civic Centers managed by the Municipal Corporation, lack adequate fire safety systems. Both AAP and Congress have threatened to lock and seal the municipal office if fire safety systems are not installed in municipal properties in Rajkot, Gujarat.

As the protest intensified, the police detained approximately 20 AAP leaders and activists. Despite the detentions, the protesters remained resolute in their demands for fair treatment and improved fire safety measures across Rajkot.
