Free Heart & Neuro Cath Lab Opens at Surat NCH
₹12 crore biplane cath lab to offer angiography, stenting and life-saving vascular treatments free under Gujarat’s super specialty healthcare project

Surat | Gujarat —Under the state government’s super specialty project, an advanced catheterization laboratory (cath lab) service has been started for the first time in the state at the New Civil Hospital (NCH) in Surat.
Under the cath lab started by the Neurology and Radiology departments of the NCH, various blood vessels from head to toe will be diagnosed and treated. Angiography, angioplasty, stenting and pacemaker implantation will be provided here free of cost using an advanced biplane machine worth an estimated Rs. 12 crore, for which private hospitals charge Rs. 5 to 50 thousand.
Explaining more about this, Surat NCHl Superintendent Dr. Dharitri Parmar said that under the state government’s super specialty project, the Neurology and Urology departments have become functional at the NCH, while interventional radiology services have been started along with the cath lab. At present, these services will be provided on an appointment basis at the Surat NCH.
He further said that on the first day of the Cath Lab service, successful endovascular interventional treatment of head and leg patients has been done in Civil. Also, work is being done towards providing complete services of the cardiac department in the future. With the facility of the latest Cath Lab, NCHl has taken another step forward in serving patients.
On this occasion, Gujarat Nursing Council Vice President Shri Iqbal Kadiwala said that this is a proud moment for Surat NCHl. It is our efforts by the state government to provide treatment to needy patients with the best modern facilities at one place for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Also, through the Cath Lab started at Surat Navi Civil, nursing students will get the opportunity to get more super specialty seats.
At the inauguration of the Cath Lab at NCH, RMO Dr. Ketan Nayak, Intervention Neurologist Dr. Prayag Makwana, Radiology Department Prof. Dr. Purvi Desai, Intervention Radiologist Dr. Hiren Rathod, Nursing Superintendent Neerja Patel, various technicians and the entire team and medical staff were present.
What is the benefit to the patient through Cath Lab?
Under ‘Cath Lab’, using advanced diagnostic imaging equipment, endovascular interventional radiology (EVIR) method is used to treat various diseases by inserting a catheter through a small hole and performing procedures like stenting, embolization or thrombectomy.
What type of vein treatment is possible?
Thinning of veins, formation of balloons in the nose, formation of bundles of veins, due to which the patient will get treatment to stop unnecessary blood flow when bleeding increases.
Apart from blood vessels, what else is a cath lab useful for?
Apart from cancer like thyroid, prostate, it is useful for treating some simple tumors as well as for shrinking the tumor or for chemo embolization in cases of certain types of cancer patients for whom surgery is not possible.
