Surat | Gujarat — The tragic death of two college friends in Surat has now drawn global attention after tech billionaire Elon Musk reacted to the incident on social media platform X, igniting a wider debate about the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

The two young women, both B.Com students and childhood friends from the Dindoli area, allegedly died by suicide on March 6 after injecting themselves with anesthesia inside a bathroom at the newly built Atmiya Sanskardham Swaminarayan Temple located in Saniya Kanade. The deceased Roshni Sharadbhai Shirshat was studying in the first year of B.Com at Citizen College in Udhana, while 20-year-old Jyotsana Atulbhai Chaudhary, a resident of Shiv Vatika in Dindoli, who lived near Roshni’s house, was studying in the second year of B.Com at Wadia Women’s College in Athwagate.

The shocking incident has triggered intense discussions online after claims surfaced that the students had searched online about suicide methods before taking the extreme step.

Musk Responds to Viral Post

The matter gained international attention after Katie Miller shared a post on X claiming that the two students had allegedly searched phrases such as “how to commit suicide” and “what drugs are used” through AI platforms.

Reacting to the post, Musk responded with a brief but striking comment — “Yikes.”

Though the response was short, it quickly went viral and brought global attention to the tragic incident in Surat. Technology experts and social media users began debating the potential dangers of misusing AI tools and whether stronger safeguards are needed.

Tragedy That Shocked Surat

The incident came to light on March 6 when the bodies of the two students were discovered inside the bathroom of the temple complex.

According to preliminary police investigations, syringes and bottles of anesthesia were found near the bodies. A postmortem later suggested that both students died due to an overdose of injected anesthetic drugs.

Police sources said the two friends had reportedly entered the bathroom together and injected anesthesia into their left hands before collapsing.

Officials are still trying to determine the exact circumstances that led to the suicide, as the motive remains unclear.

Personal Clues Found During Investigation

During the investigation, police reportedly recovered personal belongings from one of the students’ bags, including photographs of the two friends together.

Among the items was also a recent photograph showing one of the student’s parents celebrating their wedding anniversary just a day before the tragedy — a detail that has further deepened the emotional impact of the case.

Investigators are also examining whether the students may have been influenced by a similar suicide incident that reportedly occurred about 11 months ago.

Global Debate on AI Safety

The incident has now sparked broader concerns among technology experts and policymakers about the misuse of artificial intelligence tools.

Many experts argue that while AI platforms are designed to provide helpful information, there must also be safeguards to prevent users from accessing harmful content or guidance that could endanger lives.

“Technology has immense potential to benefit society, but incidents like this remind us that responsible use and safety measures are equally important,” said a digital ethics researcher commenting on the growing debate.
