Surat/Hazira (Gujarat) [India]: More than 100 educated unemployed youths from the Hazira coastal belt submitted individual affidavits to the district collector on Monday, stating that the giant industries located in Hazira are not providing permanent jobs to the children of affected families who have lost their farmlands for the development of Asia’s largest industrial zone.

In the affidavits, the unemployed educated youths from the affected families in Hazira have threatened to launch an agitation and carry out demonstrations during the public hearing for the Environmental Clearance (EC)  of the private and public sector companies.

The unemployed educated youths of Hazira visited the district collector’s office at Athwalines in Surat under the aegis of the Hazira Kantha Vistar Odhiyogik Pradushan Nivaran Samiti. The youths submitted their affidavits to the district collector and urged him for an early solution.

Dipak Patel, convener of Hazira Kantha Vistar Odhiyogik Pradushan Nivaran Samiti told TBT, “There was a mix of educated unemployed youths and those who are working on the contractual basis in the giant industries in Hazira. They all submitted affidavits to the district collector demanding they should be given permanent jobs in the industries as they are from the land-losers families”

Patel  added, “We will wait for the action from the district administration or else we shall go ahead with our protests and demonstrations against the industries in Hazira”

According to Patel, the giant industries such as Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Adani Hazira port, Adani Wilmar, Kribhco, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), NTPC, ONGC, ArcelorMittal, and Nippon Steel (AM/NS India), Niko, Cairn Energy, Gujarat Gas, HPCL, etc. located in Hazira had given written assurances during the public hearing at the time of the setting up of their facilities that they would employ local youths from the land-losers families residing within the 10-kilometer radius of the industrial zone.

“It is very unfortunate that barring a couple of industries, the majority of the industries in Hazira have not come forward to give employment to the educated youths from the land-losers and affected families,” said Patel.
