Daman | Union Territory —- In a fiery attack that has ignited political controversy in the Union Territory, Daman and Diu MP Umesh Patel labelled Administrator Praful Patel a “Raksas” (demon) for banning the immersion of Ganesh idols at the historic Nani Daman jetty on August 28. Daman MP Umesh Patel alleged that the move was intended to facilitate a grand event marking Praful Patel’s nine years in office, while religious sentiments of the people were disregarded.

“Even the Portuguese rulers never stopped Ganesh idol immersion at Nani Daman jetty. But today, Praful Patel has crossed all limits. He has not even spared God. This is nothing but dictatorial and demonic behaviour,” Umesh Patel said in a video statement posted on Facebook.

Religious Rights vs Political Celebrations

The administration recently issued an order prohibiting idol immersion at the Nani Daman jetty for two days, citing preparations for an official event celebrating Administrator Patel’s tenure. The decision has sparked outrage among locals and political leaders.

Patel criticised the move as an attack on tradition, “A very sorry order was passed. On August 28, there will be no immersion of Ganesh idols. How low can he go? What does he think of himself? He is not leaving the gods even. Thus, he is a demon.”

Allegations of Corruption and Misrule

The MP went beyond the immersion ban, launching a scathing critique of Praful Patel’s governance over the past nine years. He accused the administrator of rampant corruption, failing infrastructure, and collapsing health and education systems.

“The condition of roads has turned from bad to worse, electricity tariffs have increased, and government hospitals are without doctors or nurses. People are forced to travel to Surat and Mumbai for treatment. Medical and engineering colleges exist but without faculty. Schools have no subject teachers or principals. What has Praful Patel really achieved in nine years?” Patel asked.

He further alleged that corruption has seeped into every level of administration, including the collector’s office and police.

“Earlier, goons were kidnapping people. Now the crime branch itself is doing extortion. At traffic signals, police openly demand money. This is the reality of Praful Patel’s administration,” Patel charged.

Youth and Employment Crisis

Highlighting the lack of opportunities for local youth, the MP said thousands of young people from Daman are forced to migrate to Gujarat and Mumbai for jobs. “Instead of creating employment, Praful Patel is celebrating his so-called Amrit Kal,” he said.

The Larger Political Battle

The remarks have stirred strong reactions across the territory, with many locals echoing concerns about corruption and neglect of public services. The administration, however, has not yet issued an official response.
