Daman Cracks Down on ‘Mafia-Style’ Thar, Fortuner Culture

DAMAN : The days of flaunting SUVs as symbols of power and pulling off ‘mafia-style’ road stunts for social media reels could be numbered in the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, with the administration ordering strict action against vehicle owners indulging in such behaviour.

Under the campaign ‘Responsibility, Not Bravado’, owners and drivers of Thar, Fortuner and Scorpio vehicles were assembled at Transport Nagar and administered a pledge to follow traffic regulations and behave as responsible citizens.

The administration has specifically warned against tinted windows, unauthorised modifications and loud or illegally altered sound systems. Violators will face action by the police and RTO departments.

The crackdown follows a recent controversy involving a convoy of more than 100 vehicles, including Thars, Fortuners and Scorpios, during celebrations marking the birthday of Union Territory Administrator Praful Patel.

The rally was organised by BJP State President Mahesh Agariya and General Secretary Jignesh Patel. The large convoy reportedly displeased Patel, who had issued a public warning days earlier in Khanvel against such conduct and urged people to “stay within limits”.

Following the incident, directions were issued to the police and RTO to intensify enforcement against vehicles violating regulations. A drive against cars with tinted windows was subsequently launched in Daman.

Officials said the latest initiative is aimed at discouraging a growing culture of vehicle-based bravado, particularly among youngsters seeking attention through social media reels.

“Vehicles are meant for responsible use, not for creating an atmosphere of fear, displaying power or attracting attention through social media stunts,” the administration said.

Owners were warned that any violation of RTO norms, including illegal window tinting and unauthorised sound-system modifications, would invite strict action.

The administration’s move has received appreciation from members of the public, particularly those concerned about reckless driving, modified vehicles and public displays of intimidation.

Officials said the message was clear: owning a powerful SUV does not place anyone above the law.

The campaign seeks to shift the focus from vehicle-based bravado to responsible driving, lawful vehicle use and respect for fellow citizens.
