RajkotIn an effort to raise awareness about corruption and promote good governance, the Youth Congress and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) have launched a unique initiative in Rajkot. Amid increasing reports of malpractices in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC),  the Congress wings are organizing an essay competition with substantial cash prizes to encourage public discourse on eliminating corruption. The competition seeks to engage the public in finding solutions to ensure transparency and integrity in local governance.

The top three winners of the competition will be awarded cash prizes: Rs. 51,000 for the first place, Rs. 21,000 for the second, and Rs. 11,000 for the third. Certificates of participation will also be provided to all contestants. This effort aims to mobilize citizens and ignite change within the corruption-plagued municipality.

Corruption Plagues Rajkot Municipal Corporation

Gujarat Pradesh Congress leader Dr. Rajdeepsinh Jadeja, speaking about the initiative, highlighted the rising corruption within the Rajkot Municipal Corporation. He pointed to a variety of issues, including allegations of scams related to road construction and even cremation wood procurement. “Corruption has infiltrated many areas of the RMC, and the public is suffering as a result,” Dr. Jadeja remarked. He added that the Congress had been vocal about these problems, but this essay competition is a new, creative way to bring the issue to the forefront.

The essay competition invites participants to submit essays of 1,500 to 2,000 words on how good governance can be established by eradicating corruption in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation. A panel of experts will review the essays and select the winners based on their insights and solutions. The goal is to tap into the collective wisdom of the people to find innovative approaches to combat the widespread corruption in the RMC.

A Platform for the Public’s Voice

The competition is designed not just to expose corruption but also to give citizens an opportunity to voice their frustrations and suggest solutions. “The politicians currently in power are preoccupied with their own internal divisions, leaving the people feeling betrayed,” Dr. Jadeja commented. “Through this competition, we aim to bring out the true voice of the people and showcase what they expect from their local government.”

Dr. Jadeja urged the public to participate in large numbers, expressing confidence that the competition will yield valuable ideas that could potentially lead to systemic improvements. Essays can be submitted in person or by registered post at office number 302, 3rd floor of Pink Point on Yagnik Road, Rajkot, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Corruption Scandals Spark Action

The essay competition comes on the heels of a series of corruption scandals that have rocked the RMC, including accusations following the tragic fire at the TRP Game Zone. The incident exposed significant lapses in fire safety protocols and raised questions about regulatory oversight in the municipality. In response, the Congress party has staged protests and is now turning to this new initiative as a peaceful way to highlight the problem.

According to Congress leaders, the essay competition is a way to channel public anger into a constructive dialogue. “This is a new experiment to awaken both the public and the system to the realities of corruption,” said Dr. Jadeja. He stressed that this effort is not just about criticism but about providing a platform for citizens to share their ideas for reforming the RMC.

A Call to Action

The Youth Congress and NSUI have called for widespread participation in the essay competition, believing that it will serve as a rallying point for those who want to see change in Rajkot’s governance. “We are appealing to as many people as possible to join this campaign,” Dr. Jadeja emphasized.
