Surat : A newly built bridge over the Mindhola River in Tapi district collapsed, raising concerns about the quality of infrastructure and commuter safety on Wednesday.

The bridge, constructed at a cost of Rs 2 crore by the Tapi district panchayat’s Roads and Buildings department, fell way, inflicting considerable damage to the area’s transit network.

The collapse of the bridge has prompted calls for a comprehensive probe into the tragedy. Darshan Naik, the general secretary of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC), has urged for a detailed investigation into the reasons of the collapse. Naik emphasised the necessity of holding those involved accountable and ensuring that similar situations do not occur again in the future.

Responding swiftly to the incident, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has ordered a high-level inquiry into the bridge collapse. The Chief Minister expressed concern over the incident and emphasized the need to identify any lapses in the construction process. The inquiry aims to determine the factors contributing to the collapse and assess whether there were any shortcomings in the design, construction, or maintenance of the bridge.

Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported in connection with the bridge collapse. However, the disruption to the transportation network has inconvenienced local residents and commuters who rely on the route for their daily activities. The bridge, which is a vital link between the RTO office at Tichakpura and Degama, will require immediate attention and repair to restore normalcy.

The collapse of the Mindhola bridge highlights the critical importance of infrastructure safety and quality assurance. The incident raises questions about the durability and structural integrity of public infrastructure projects. It serves as a reminder that rigorous evaluation, monitoring, and maintenance are essential to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.

Efforts are underway to assess the extent of the damage and devise a plan for the timely reconstruction of the bridge. The authorities are expected to prioritize the restoration of the transportation route to minimize the inconvenience caused to the local community.

As the investigation into the bridge collapse progresses, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the findings and recommendations that arise from the inquiry. It is crucial that any deficiencies or lapses are identified and addressed promptly to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The Mindhola bridge collapse serves as a wake-up call for authorities to enhance their focus on quality control, structural integrity, and maintenance of public infrastructure projects. The incident also highlights the need for improved coordination and transparency among the various departments involved in infrastructure development to ensure the highest standards of safety and reliability.

As the investigation unfolds, the affected communities and commuters eagerly await the completion of the inquiry and the subsequent actions taken to prevent such incidents and safeguard the well-being of the public.
