AHMEDABAD :  In a major push to strengthen India’s digital forensic ecosystem, the Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop multilingual artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for forensic science, digital investigations, research and citizen services.

The collaboration, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), aims to eliminate language barriers in criminal investigations by integrating AI-powered translation, speech recognition and voice technologies into forensic workflows.

Under the partnership, BHASHINI’s multilingual AI platforms—including Udyat, Mitra, AppMitra, Sahyogi and Pravakta—will be integrated with NFSU’s academic and research ecosystem. The initiative will support multilingual evidence documentation, transcription of witness statements, translation of forensic records, digital evidence analysis and AI-enabled citizen services.

During the signing ceremony, the BHASHINI team showcased live demonstrations of its AI capabilities, including speech-to-text, speech-to-speech translation, text translation, optical character recognition (OCR), transliteration and voice AI, highlighting their potential to improve investigative efficiency across multiple Indian languages.

“Language should never become a barrier to investigation or access to public services. Together, we are building sovereign AI capabilities that strengthen both digital inclusion and India’s forensic infrastructure,” said Amitabh Nag, CEO of the Digital India BHASHINI Division.

The collaboration will also focus on developing domain-specific language models, creating forensic datasets through Bhashadaan, and promoting research and capacity building among students, faculty and investigators.

“Our collaboration with BHASHINI opens a new vista where language can itself become evidence in forensic investigations. This partnership will create new possibilities for applying AI-powered language technologies in forensic science,” said Dr. S.O. Janare, Campus Director, NFSU.

Officials said the initiative is expected to accelerate innovation in multilingual AI while making forensic investigations more inclusive, efficient and accessible across India’s diverse linguistic landscape.
