Bharuch : For the third time in four days, communal tensions have flared in Gujarat, with Bharuch becoming the latest site of conflict. Early Wednesday morning, a confrontation broke out between two communities in the Gokulnagar area over the installation of religious flags. This follows the stone-pelting incident at a Ganesha pandal in Syedpura, Surat, and a similar episode of unrest in Vadodara, raising concerns about the peace and stability in the state.

The situation in Bharuch turned volatile when residents, observing Ganeshotsav and preparing for the upcoming Eid-e-Milad festival, began putting up religious flags and pylons in Gokulnagar, a neighborhood inhabited by both Hindu and Muslim communities. Despite prior appeals from community leaders and authorities to avoid placing pylons near each other’s homes, tensions escalated when flags were installed, drawing crowds from both sides. What started as a dispute over the flags quickly devolved into clashes, with both groups reportedly engaging in altercations.

Upon receiving reports of the confrontation, Bharuch District Superintendent of Police (SP) Mayur Chawda immediately dispatched a team of law enforcement officers to the scene, including personnel from various units such as the Local Crime Branch (LCB), Special Operations Group (SOG), and multiple police stations. Thanks to their swift intervention, the crowds were dispersed, and the situation was brought under control before it could escalate further.

Police Take Swift Action

In the aftermath of the incident, the Bharuch police wasted no time in taking decisive action. A formal complaint has been registered against the mob involved in the clashes, with the names of 20 individuals mentioned. Of these, 17 have already been arrested, and police raids have been initiated across the area to apprehend the remaining suspects. The police have also increased their presence in the neighborhood, conducting foot patrols to maintain peace and prevent any further disturbances.

SP Mayur Chawda addressed the situation, urging both communities to exercise restraint and refrain from actions that could further inflame tensions. “We have taken strict legal action against those involved in the incident. People must maintain peace and avoid spreading rumors or provocative content, especially on social media,” he said. Chawda warned that the police are closely monitoring social media platforms, and any individual caught sharing messages, photos, or videos that could worsen the situation would face severe legal consequences.

Injuries and Community Response

Though the immediate threat of violence was quelled, reports indicate that two or three people were injured during the clashes and have been admitted to the hospital for treatment. The situation in Bharuch, already tense in the wake of similar incidents in Surat and Vadodara, remains delicate.

To address the escalating communal tensions, SP Chawda has convened a peace committee meeting, bringing together leaders from both the Hindu and Muslim communities. The purpose of the meeting is to foster dialogue and cooperation, with both sides being urged to prevent further conflict. Community leaders have been tasked with helping calm their respective groups, emphasizing the importance of peace and tolerance during this sensitive time.

Escalating Communal Tensions in Gujarat

The incident in Bharuch is the latest in a series of communal clashes that have rocked Gujarat over the past few days. On September 8, an alarming incident took place in Syedpura, Surat, where six teenagers allegedly pelted stones at a Ganesha pandal from a rickshaw. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, with the gathered crowd reacting violently. In response, police resorted to using tear gas and lathi charges to disperse the mob. The incident resulted in the arrest of 32 individuals, adding to the growing concern over communal unrest in the state.

Tensions have also been reported in Vadodara, where a similar dispute over religious activities led to confrontations between different community groups. While authorities have successfully contained the situation in all instances, the recurring nature of these conflicts has raised alarm among residents and local officials alike.

Call for Peace and Cooperation

In the wake of these incidents, the Gujarat police have consistently emphasized the need for peace and restraint. With the festive season in full swing, the likelihood of communal flare-ups remains high. Authorities are urging citizens to focus on the spirit of celebration and avoid being drawn into conflict.
