An anonymous foreign student named Jia Li said that an artificial intelligence (AI) detector incorrectly identified more than half of her essay as being written by AI. Some of the stuff that was marked was her own writing, some of which she had originally written in Chinese and then had a machine translate into English.

Li’s worries are shared by many overseas students who are concerned that improper use of such software would result in unjustified allegations of cheating in the classroom. ‘Perplexity’: A Questionable Metric or Not?

The ‘perplexity’ metric is a measure of how complex terms are utilised in the text, according to James Zou, assistant professor of biomedical data science at Stanford University. Because they don’t utilise as many complicated terms, non-native speakers’ writing is sometimes misidentified as being produced by AI due to this dependency. In addition, non-native writers’ use of translation and grammar tools might lessen the intricacy of the text, leading detectors to label such material as computer-generated.
