Ahmedabad : Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Gyanendra Singh Malik, known for his diligence and strong administrative grip, is facing intense scrutiny. The city’s law and order situation has significantly improved under his tenure, but a barrage of criticism targeting his personal and professional reputation has raised eyebrows.

From minor traffic woes to street scuffles, every issue seems to point fingers at Malik. This shift in narrative is puzzling, especially when crime data paints a contrasting picture. Could this be more than just governance-related criticism?

Crime Trends: What the Numbers Say

Contrary to the allegations, the latest statistics indicate a marked improvement in law and order across Ahmedabad. A comparison of the first 10 months of 2023 and 2024 shows a decline in most categories of crime.

Homicides have dropped by 24.74%, with 73 incidents recorded this year compared to 97 in the same period last year. Similarly, cases of attempted murder have decreased by 19.57%, with 74 cases reported in 2024 compared to 92 in 2023.

Theft-related crimes have seen significant reductions as well. The number of thefts has fallen by 28.85%, from 4,427 cases last year to 3,150 this year. Robberies have decreased by 21.31%, with 96 incidents reported this year compared to 122 last year. Chain snatching has also declined by 21.01%, with 94 cases this year compared to 119 last year.

Vehicle thefts have seen a drop of 14.76%, with 1,525 incidents reported this year compared to 1,789 in 2023. Assault cases, or maramari, have reduced by 11.94%, with 1,416 incidents reported this year compared to 1,608 last year.

The only category to show an increase is fraud-related crimes, which have risen by 9.38%, with 420 cases this year compared to 384 last year.

Festive Seasons Without Incident

Ahmedabad has seen peaceful celebrations of major festivals such as Rath Yatra, Diwali, Navratri, and Eid during Malik’s tenure. The absence of significant disruptions during these high-stakes events speaks volumes about the city’s preparedness and the police force’s efficiency.

The data also underscores successful efforts to control heinous crimes like riots, organized loot, and attacks on vulnerable groups, including senior citizens and women.

Unpacking the Criticism

Despite this apparent progress, Commissioner Malik has become a lightning rod for criticism. Sources within police circles suggest this could stem from larger political or administrative ambitions.

One notable factor is the upcoming selection for the Director General of Police (DGP) post in Gujarat, scheduled for mid-2025. Historically, the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner has been a top contender for this coveted position. Malik, with his spotless service record and reputation, is considered a frontrunner.

However, maintaining a clean slate is crucial for contenders. Allegations, regardless of their validity, could serve as a tool to derail Malik’s chances.

Are the Attacks Justified?

Critics argue that recent street clashes, drug cases, and prostitution rackets reflect poorly on the commissioner’s leadership. However, experts point out that these issues are not unique to Ahmedabad. Neighboring cities of Ahmedabad face similar challenges, often on a larger scale.

Moreover, Ahmedabad’s significant improvements in curbing property crimes, violent offenses, and public disturbances suggest a coordinated and consistent approach to policing. These achievements cannot be overlooked, even amidst isolated shortcomings.

A Broader Perspective

For citizens, the key takeaway should be the overall improvement in the city’s safety metrics. While no administration is immune to criticism, it is crucial to differentiate between systemic failures and targeted campaigns.

The focus should remain on ensuring safety, addressing public grievances, and fostering trust between law enforcement and the community. Commissioner Malik’s legacy, like any public official’s, will ultimately be defined by his actions and the tangible impact of his leadership—not speculative accusations.
