AHMEDABAD: Gujarat’s biggest religious procession and the country’s second-largest Jagannath Rath Yatra after Puri unfolded in a grand and peaceful manner on Thursday as lakhs of devotees lined the streets of Ahmedabad to welcome Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. The 149th Ahmedabad Jagannath Rath Yatra was marked by devotion, communal harmony, advanced security arrangements and pleasant weather, making it one of the most memorable editions in recent years.

The day began at 4 am with the traditional Mangala Aarti at the Jagannath Temple, attended by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah along with his family. Following the aarti, a special Khichdi bhog was offered to the deities before they were ceremonially seated on their respective chariots.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel performed the centuries-old ‘Pahind Vidhi’, symbolically sweeping the path before flagging off the Rath Yatra. Lord Jagannath embarked on the Nandighosh chariot, Lord Balabhadra on Taldhwaj, and Goddess Subhadra on Darpadalan, as chants of “Jai Jagannath” echoed across the city.

“The Rath Yatra reflects Gujarat’s rich spiritual heritage and strengthens the bond between devotees and Lord Jagannath,” a temple official said.

One of the highlights of the procession was its warm welcome in Dariapur, where leaders of the Muslim community honoured the temple Mahant and trustees, reinforcing the long-standing tradition of communal harmony. White pigeons were released near the Tabu Chowki route as a symbol of peace and brotherhood.

Cloudy skies and light showers in parts of Ahmedabad, especially near Kalupur, brought relief to devotees from the scorching heat. Many considered the drizzle during the procession an auspicious blessing from Lord Jagannath.

To ensure smooth conduct of the procession, the Gujarat government deployed extensive security and modern technology. The entire route was monitored in real time through the Chief Minister’s Dashboard video wall, enabling authorities to coordinate crowd management, traffic control and emergency response.

For the first time, special arrangements were introduced to manage the movement of elephants participating in the procession. Experienced mahouts and dedicated monitoring teams ensured the animals remained calm and moved safely through densely packed crowds.

“Technology and meticulous planning have helped ensure that the Rath Yatra remains safe, disciplined and seamless,” an official associated with the security arrangements said.

Despite the elaborate arrangements, more than 10 devotees reportedly fainted due to the heavy crowd and humid conditions. Emergency 108 ambulance teams rushed to provide first aid, while the fire department continuously sprayed water along parts of the route to keep devotees cool.
