Gandhinagar | Gujarat — The Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro service has emerged as a reliable, safe and efficient mode of public transport with the passenger count rising fourfold in three years from 35,000 to 1.5 lakh on daily basis.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the metro service up to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, part of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Phase 2, on January 11. This extension has further strengthened connectivity between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, making travel more convenient for citizens while also helping reduce travel costs.
There is now direct metro connectivity from Mahatma Mandir Metro Station to Gandhinagar Railway Station. The metro now provides easy access to major tourist destinations such as Akshardham Temple and Dandi Kutir. This expansion will benefit thousands of employees, students and daily commuters. Daily travel will become easier for visitors attending national and global-level programs at Mahatma Mandir and for students studying at Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya.
Over the last three years, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro has offered a simple, affordable and reliable travel option for citizens. Between October 2022 and December 2025, more than 11.50 crore passengers travelled by metro. In 2023, an average of 12 to 27 lakh people used the metro each month. In 2024, this number rose to around 27 to 35 lakh passengers per month. In 2025, over 44 lakh passengers travelled by metro, reflecting the growing trust in the service.
Last year, thousands of people relied on the metro during major events like IPL matches and the Coldplay concert at Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad. For events such as IPL, international cricket matches, and Rath Yatra, monthly passenger numbers rose from 1.6 to 2.1 lakh. During the Coldplay concert on 25-26 January 2025, 4.11 lakh passengers travelled by metro, which demonstrates the metro’s capability and reliability in major international events.
With the completion of Metro Phase-2, Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has expanded the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro network to 68 km, serving 53 stations. The extension of the metro service up to Mahatma Mandir will reduce dependence on private vehicles, ease traffic congestion, and offer passengers an affordable and environmentally friendly travel option. This expansion has built a fully integrated metro system that will serve citizens for decades. The Ahmedabad Metro Rail extension marks a significant milestone in Gujarat’s journey toward becoming a global urban centre.
