Ahmedabad : Residents can finally experience the thrill of a double-decker bus ride! After a hiatus of over 30 years, the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) has reintroduced this iconic mode of public transport on the city’s roads.

Three brand new, air-conditioned double-decker buses were flagged off on Wednesday by Mayor Pratibha Jain and BJP leaders, marking a significant milestone for the city’s transportation network.

These initial double-decker buses will operate on three designated routes: Laldarwaja to Sheelj, Naroda to Lambha circle, and Sarangpur to Singarwa village. This follows a successful trial run of a double-decker bus on the Vasna to Wadaj route, implemented in response to public demand, according to AMTS Committee Chairman Dharamsingh Desai. The positive response from citizens on the trial run paved the way for the expansion of the service.

Each double-decker boasts a spacious interior with comfortable seating, accommodating 29 passengers on the lower deck and 36 on the upper deck. Passengers seeking a scenic view can opt for the top deck, offering a unique perspective of the city.  For added convenience, the buses are equipped with mobile phone charging USB ports and route map screens, ensuring a smooth and informative travel experience.

Safety is a top priority for AMTS. Each double-decker is fitted with four CCTV cameras to monitor passenger activity and maintain a secure environment. Additionally, a walkie-talkie set is provided for emergency communication, and a dashboard camera records the driver’s view, enhancing overall safety measures.

The introduction of these double-decker buses signifies AMTS’ commitment to modernizing and improving public transportation in Ahmedabad.  With a total of seven double-decker buses planned for purchase, the service is expected to expand to cover more routes in the near future. This exciting addition to the city’s transportation network promises to provide a comfortable, convenient, and scenic travel experience for Ahmedabad residents.
