Surat | Gujarat —The crisis gripping Surat’s workforce is rapidly widening, with the city’s crucial diamond industry now staring at a potential mass exodus of workers due to an acute shortage of LPG cylinders. After textile labourers began returning to their hometowns, diamond workers from North Gujarat and Saurashtra are now preparing to follow suit, raising alarm across the sector.
The Diamond Workers Union Gujarat has stepped in, warning that unless immediate steps are taken, the situation could spiral into a full-blown labour crisis. The union has submitted a representation to the district collector, urging authorities to allow LPG distribution to workers based on Aadhaar and other identity proofs instead of ration cards.
“We are receiving continuous complaints from diamond workers that gas cylinders are either not available or not delivered even after booking,” said Bhavesh Tank. “If this continues, workers will have no option but to leave Surat, just like what we are witnessing in the textile sector.”
The problem is particularly severe for migrant workers who lack local ration cards, making it nearly impossible to access subsidised LPG. Many are now forced to rely on the black market, where prices have surged sharply, adding to their financial burden.
A diamond worker from Varachha area expressed his frustration, saying, “We can manage low wages or less work, but how do we survive without cooking gas? Even after booking, cylinders don’t arrive on time. Going back home is becoming the only option.”
Another worker added, “We came to Surat to earn, but now daily life has become a struggle. If basic needs like gas are not available, how can we stay?”
Industry insiders say the crisis has been compounded by global tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, which have already slowed demand and impacted the diamond trade. Now, the LPG shortage is emerging as a new and immediate trigger for worker migration.
Bhavesh Tank further warned, “This is not just a supply issue—it is a threat to the entire diamond ecosystem of Surat. If workers start leaving in large numbers, production will be hit badly, and recovery will take months.”
The union has demanded urgent intervention from the administration to streamline LPG supply and ensure timely delivery to workers. It has also called for special provisions for migrant labourers who form the backbone of Surat’s diamond industry.
