Surat : The aftermath of a catastrophic fire at Aether Industries Limited, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, has claimed eight lives of innocent workers.

The blaze, ignited by a leakage of Tetrahydrofuran (THF), a highly flammable liquid and vapor, resulted in the recovery of seven charred bodies of workers near the chemical storage tank area. The eighth casualty, identified as Bihaspati Rameshwar Bhuia, 31, tragically succumbed to severe injuries sustained during the incident.

The explosion within Aether Industries had far-reaching consequences, with Bhuia, an employee of the neighboring Shan Textile Dyeing and Printing Mill, being critically injured when an aluminum sheet fell upon him due to the massive detonation. Despite efforts to save his life, he passed away on Saturday morning at the hospital.

MHS Shaikh, president of the Brackish Water Research Centre (BWRC), emphasized the potential exacerbation of the fire’s intensity due to the volatile nature of THF. Shaikh underscored the substance’s low flash point at -21 degrees Celsius, indicating its proclivity to ignite upon contact with air. Speculation regarding the incident suggests a potential THF leak from a storage tank, subsequently escalating into a fire exacerbated by inadequate activation of fire extinguishing equipment.

Reports indicate that around ten workers, suffering from burns covering over 80% of their bodies, remain in critical condition and are currently under treatment in both private and government hospitals. Concerns persist over the likelihood of an increase in the death toll as the situation develops in the forthcoming days.

This devastating event at Aether Industries has raised pressing questions regarding safety protocols, the handling of volatile chemicals, and the efficacy of fire suppression measures in industrial settings. Investigations into the precise cause and oversight leading to this tragic incident are expected to continue as authorities seek to prevent similar calamities in the future.
