Ahmedabad | Gujarat — In a significant political development, the President of India has assigned Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat the additional responsibility of serving as the Governor of Maharashtra. The move comes after CP Radhakrishnan tendered his resignation upon being elected as the Vice President of India. The order, issued under the President’s special powers, has been implemented with immediate effect.
Acharya Devvrat, 66, who has been Governor of Gujarat since 2019, will now oversee the constitutional duties of Maharashtra alongside his existing role. Known for his grassroots connect and commitment to social reform, Devvrat’s appointment has been described as both timely and strategic.
A Leader with a Reformist Vision
Before joining politics, Devvrat was an Arya Samaj pracharak and an educationist, serving as the principal of a Gurukul in Kurukshetra, Haryana. His tenure as Gujarat Governor has been marked by initiatives such as Zero Budget Natural Farming, Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao, drug de-addiction campaigns, and large-scale water conservation drives.
“Acharya Devvrat has demonstrated that governance is not just about administration, but also about inspiring social transformation,” said a political analyst . “His model of zero-budget farming, which is now being practiced on more than 7.5 lakh acres across Gujarat, is a testament to his innovative vision.”
People-Oriented Governance
Devvrat introduced ‘Jivamrut’, a low-cost organic fertiliser developed on his farmland in Kurukshetra, which is now used by more than nine lakh farmers in Gujarat. During the pandemic, his Corona Seva Yagya provided essential supplies and health equipment to over one lakh people in need.
“Acharyaji is not only a constitutional head but also a people’s Governor,” said a Raj Bhavan official in Gandhinagar. “His focus on tree plantation, organic farming, and youth-driven initiatives has created long-lasting impact.”
Political Context: CP Radhakrishnan Elected Vice President
Devvrat’s additional charge comes as NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan was elected as the Vice President of India. Radhakrishnan, a veteran leader from Tamil Nadu, secured 452 votes, defeating opposition candidate and former Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudarshan Reddy, who received 300 votes.
The election saw 752 MPs voting out of 782, reflecting an impressive turnout. With this victory, Radhakrishnan becomes the country’s second-highest constitutional authority, leaving the Maharashtra gubernatorial post vacant.
