SURAT: In a major welfare measure for the legal fraternity, the Bar Council of Gujarat has decided to disburse more than ₹5.56 crore in death benefits to the heirs of eligible advocates across the state.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Bar Council of Gujarat Chairman Advocate Pravin Patel and the Chairman of the Executive Committee. The benefits will be released to families of advocates who have completed the required procedures under the Bar Council of India Certificate and Place of Practice (Verification) Rules, 2015.
The move is aimed at providing financial support to families following the death of advocates covered under the welfare provisions.
Advocate Pravin Patel urged members of the legal profession to enrol in the welfare scheme and ensure regular payment of welfare fees.
“Advocates should register for the welfare scheme, pay the welfare fees regularly and avail themselves of the benefits available under the scheme,” Patel said.
The initiative has been welcomed by six Surat-based elected members of the Bar Council of Gujarat — Advocates Zaki M. Shaikh, Bhavesh Rabari, Hitesh Patel, Haresh Nakrani, Priti Joshi and Hiral Panwala.
The six members said the decision would provide crucial financial assistance to families of advocates during difficult circumstances. They also appealed to lawyers to complete their registration and remain regular members of the welfare fund.
“Registration under the welfare scheme and regular payment of welfare fees are important to ensure that an advocate’s family receives financial assistance in the event of an untimely demise,” the members said.
The Bar Council has reiterated its appeal to advocates across Gujarat to complete the required formalities and maintain their welfare fund membership.
The ₹5.56-crore disbursement is expected to provide financial relief to the families of eligible advocates and underline the role of welfare mechanisms in supporting members of the legal profession and their dependants.
