Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], July 21: Ahmedabad emerged as the national hub for coronary artery bypass surgery as the 5th Annual Conference of the Society of Coronary Surgeons (SCS 2026) was successfully held on 18th and 19th July 2026 at Club Babylon & Sheraton Convention Centre. Endorsed by the Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS), the conference witnessed the participation of more than 500 cardiac surgeons from across India, along with internationally renowned faculty, under the theme ‘Gifted Hands, Future Minds.’ The two-day scientific conclave showcased the latest advancements in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), patient-specific surgical decision-making, minimally invasive and robotic bypass surgery, artificial intelligence, and evidence-based innovations aimed at improving outcomes for patients suffering from coronary artery disease.
Dr. Sanjeeth Peter, Organising Chairman, SCS 2026 and Secretary, Society of Coronary Surgeons, said, Ahmedabad had the privilege of hosting some of the finest minds in coronary surgery. The conference provided an exceptional academic platform for sharing knowledge, discussing challenging clinical cases and exploring cutting-edge surgical innovations that will shape the future of coronary artery bypass surgery. Our collective goal remained to improve patient outcomes through scientific excellence and collaborative learning. Dr. Dhiren Shah, Organising Secretary, SCS 2026 and Joint Secretary, Society of Coronary Surgeons, said, Coronary artery bypass surgery has become one of the most important treatment options for patients with advanced coronary artery disease in India. Over the last five years, the annual number of bypass surgeries performed in the country has increased to approximately 2.75 to 3 lakh procedures, making India one of the highest-volume countries for CABG in the world. Nearly 15–20% of these patients are below the age of 45 years, demonstrating that bypass surgery is increasingly becoming an effective treatment option even for younger patients with complex coronary artery disease. Another significant trend is that around 20% of patients undergoing bypass surgery are women, with many of them below 40 years of age, reflecting the changing pattern of heart disease among younger women and highlighting the growing burden of premature cardiovascular disease. More than an academic gathering, the conference aimed to strengthen surgical expertise across the country by enabling participants to exchange experiences, understand emerging technologies and adopt globally accepted best practices. Ultimately, the knowledge shared during SCS 2026 is expected to translate into safer surgeries, faster recovery, improved long-term outcomes and better quality of life for thousands of heart patients across India.
Coronary artery disease continues to be one of India’s leading causes of mortality, with an increasing number of patients developing complex heart blockages at a younger age. Modern bypass surgery has evolved significantly over the past decade, making it possible to customise surgical strategies according to each patient’s age, disease severity, associated illnesses, heart function and anatomical complexity. The conference served as a valuable platform for surgeons to deliberate on these evolving concepts and share best practices for delivering personalised cardiac care. The conference was organised under the guidance of Patron Dr. Sukumar H. Mehta, with Dr. Sanjeeth Peter serving as Organising Chairman, Dr. Dhiren Shah as Organising Secretary, Dr. Bhupesh D. Shah and Dr. Gaurav Goel as Organising Joint Secretaries, and Dr. Nikunj Vyas as Organising Treasurer. The scientific programme also featured valuable contributions from eminent faculty, along with several distinguished national and international experts. Unlike conventional academic meetings, SCS 2026 was designed around real-life case discussions, expert panel debates, live operative videos, landmark clinical trials and interactive workshops. Scientific sessions covered multi-arterial grafting, minimally invasive CABG, robotic surgery, hybrid coronary revascularisation, complex redo bypass procedures, perioperative optimisation, AI-assisted surgical practice and the future of coronary surgery. The successful conclusion of SCS 2026 reaffirmed Ahmedabad’s growing prominence as a centre for advanced cardiac sciences and reinforced India’s commitment to advancing coronary surgery through innovation, collaboration and continuous medical education.
