SURAT : Surat is positioning itself for a major leap in global aviation connectivity as industry leaders call for the transformation of Surat International Airport into a world-class hub capable of serving passengers from 26 Indian states and global destinations.

In a high-level meeting held on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Samhati, Sarsana, the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) engaged with senior officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), including Regional Executive Director Pulla Hezekiah, to present an ambitious roadmap for the airport’s future expansion.

The meeting, chaired by SGCCI President Ashok Jirawala, highlighted the urgent need to strengthen domestic and international connectivity for Surat’s diverse population, which includes professionals and traders from across the country.

“Citizens from 26 states live in Surat for business and employment. Seamless air connectivity to their home states and international destinations is now essential for growth,” said SGCCI President Ashok Jirawala.

The chamber presented a comprehensive master plan focusing on transforming the airport into a future-ready aviation and economic hub. Key proposals included an international air cargo terminal, advanced navigation systems, dedicated international passenger facilities, expanded apron capacity, and the establishment of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) infrastructure.

The proposal also emphasized developing an Aerotropolis and Airport Economic Zone to integrate aviation with Surat’s booming industrial ecosystem.

“Surat is one of India’s fastest-growing economic centres. A world-class airport is no longer optional—it is a necessity for trade, tourism and investment expansion,” the SGCCI presentation noted.

Other major recommendations included runway expansion planning, improved air traffic management, green airport initiatives such as solar energy adoption and EV infrastructure, and enhanced last-mile connectivity through public transport upgrades.

AAI’s Regional Executive Director Pulla Hezekiah appreciated the detailed vision presented by SGCCI and assured that the suggestions would be examined in alignment with ongoing and future development plans.

“We acknowledge the forward-looking approach of the chamber. Surat airport will be developed in line with international standards to meet the region’s growing demands,” Hezekiah said.

The chamber also stressed the importance of aviation training centres, general aviation facilities, and increased flight operations to both domestic and international destinations.
