AHMEDABAD : Ahmedabad is set to witness a major transformation in traffic enforcement as the Regional Transport Office (RTO) prepares to roll out an advanced automated system that will digitally track vehicle compliance and instantly flag expired documents such as Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, insurance, and fitness records.

The new system aims to eliminate loopholes that often allowed non-compliant vehicles to remain active in official records. Until now, even scrapped or unfit vehicles could continue to appear as active in the database if their registration certificate remained valid. This gap in monitoring frequently led to enforcement challenges on the ground.

Under the upgraded mechanism, any lapse in mandatory documents will automatically update the vehicle’s status on the central transport portal. Such vehicles will be marked as “deactivated” or “blacklisted,” significantly tightening regulatory oversight.

An RTO official explained the intent behind the system, stating, “This reform is designed to ensure that no vehicle remains operational on paper if it fails to meet basic safety and legal requirements. It will bring real-time accountability into the system.”

The initiative is particularly significant for a city like Ahmedabad, which has more than 38 lakh registered vehicles. Authorities believe the digital system will drastically improve compliance and reduce manual intervention in enforcement procedures.

Once implemented, vehicle owners will receive automated alerts on their registered mobile numbers. They will be given a 45-day grace period to renew expired documents such as insurance policies, PUC certificates, or fitness approvals. During this time, reminders will be sent through the system to ensure timely compliance.

If the documents are not renewed after three consecutive alerts, the system will escalate the case by sharing details with traffic police and enforcement authorities. Vehicles caught in violation after this stage will face fines and further legal action.

In stricter cases of repeated non-compliance, authorities may even initiate proceedings that could lead to suspension or cancellation of driving licenses.

Officials say the system is not only aimed at enforcement but also at protecting citizens. Expired insurance or missing PUC certificates often create complications during road accidents, leading to delays or denial of claim settlements. By ensuring timely renewals, the new mechanism is expected to safeguard both road safety and financial security for vehicle owners.

A senior transport department source said, “The goal is not to penalize but to prevent violations before they happen. This system will help create a cleaner, safer, and more accountable transport ecosystem in Ahmedabad.”
