SURAT : As India races to become a global technology powerhouse, Surat’s premier institute of higher learning is positioning itself at the forefront of that transformation. The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Surat has announced two new academic programmes aimed at preparing students for emerging opportunities in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, defence technologies and space systems.
Beginning from the 2026-27 academic year, the institute will introduce a B.Tech programme in Mathematics & Computing and an M.Tech programme in Electronics and Communication Engineering with a specialization in Defence & Space Electronics. The move comes amid rising demand for highly skilled professionals in strategic and future-focused sectors.
“The introduction of these programmes reflects IIIT Surat’s commitment to anticipating future technological trends and aligning its academic offerings with national priorities,” said Rajeev Shorey, Director of IIIT Surat. He added that the courses have been designed to provide students with strong theoretical foundations and practical expertise in fields expected to drive India’s technological growth.
The expansion increases IIIT Surat’s B.Tech intake from 280 to 384 seats, while M.Tech capacity will rise from 40 to 60 seats. The institute will now offer five B.Tech and three M.Tech programmes across key technology disciplines.
Highlighting the broader impact of the initiative, Asha Dave said the programmes would strengthen India’s talent pipeline in advanced computing, defence, semiconductor manufacturing and space technologies while creating opportunities for Gujarat’s innovation ecosystem.
IIIT Surat has also emerged as a growing research and innovation hub. Between January and June 2026, the institute produced more than 45 research publications and secured two patents. Its startup ecosystem has incubated five ventures founded by students and faculty members.
The institute has established collaborations with global and national leaders, including AMD, MediaTek, Bosch and ISRO Space Applications Centre, alongside partnerships with leading universities in Russia, Singapore, Italy and Australia.
With a highest placement package of ₹54.89 lakh per annum and an average package of ₹14.85 lakh in 2025-26, IIIT Surat’s latest expansion signals its ambition to develop future-ready talent and contribute to India’s technological and economic advancement.
