Surat | Gujarat — A potentially dangerous mid-air situation was averted on Thursday after an Indian Army helicopter carrying four Army personnel made an emergency landing at Surat Airport following a technical malfunction during flight.

According to officials, the helicopter, identified as IA-1165, had taken off from Vadodara Air Force Station at around 3:21 pm and was headed towards Nashik when the crew detected a technical issue while airborne. Acting swiftly and following emergency safety protocols, the pilot diverted the aircraft to Surat Airport and executed a precautionary landing.

The helicopter landed safely without any damage or injuries, bringing major relief to airport authorities and defence officials. All four Army personnel onboard were reported safe.

Airport sources said emergency response teams and security personnel were immediately placed on alert after information about the technical snag was communicated to Surat Airport authorities.

“Thanks to the timely decision and professional handling by the pilot and crew, the helicopter landed safely without any untoward incident,” an official associated with airport operations said.

Following the emergency landing, technical teams and defence officials began inspecting the helicopter to identify the exact nature of the malfunction. Necessary repair and maintenance procedures are currently underway before further clearance for flight operations.

Officials said the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), along with airport authorities and other concerned agencies, ensured complete coordination and security arrangements during the operation.

“The situation was handled in a calm and coordinated manner. Security protocols were immediately activated to ensure passenger and airport safety,” a CISF official stated.

The incident briefly drew attention at Surat Airport, with several passengers and visitors noticing increased security movement near the landing area. However, airport operations reportedly continued normally without major disruption.

Emergency landings involving military aircraft are relatively rare and are generally carried out only as a precaution when pilots detect even minor technical irregularities. Aviation experts say such decisions are critical to ensuring the safety of crew members and preventing potential risks.
