Surat | Gujarat — A fresh political controversy has erupted in Surat after a traffic island developed as an educational landmark was allegedly turned into an election propaganda site ahead of the upcoming local body polls.
The traffic island in Jahangirpura, created by The Radiant International School, was originally designed to promote educational values and civic awareness. However, residents were shocked to find the installation draped in saffron flags bearing the lotus symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
What has drawn the sharpest criticism is the placement of party flags directly into the hands of bronze statues of students within the structure — a move many say crosses ethical boundaries by turning a symbol of learning into a political billboard.
Local residents say the transformation of a public space associated with education into a campaign display reflects the growing politicisation of civic infrastructure in Surat.
“This island was meant to inspire children and promote road safety and education. Using it for political publicity sends the wrong message,” said a resident from the Jahangirpura area.
Civic observers argue that such acts blur the line between community initiatives and political campaigning. “When school-sponsored public installations are used for electioneering, it raises serious questions about the misuse of shared civic spaces,” said a local activist.
The controversy comes at a time when the city is gearing up for local body elections, with political activity intensifying across neighbourhoods.
Critics say the incident highlights the urgent need for clearer guidelines on political advertising in public spaces, especially those linked to educational institutions.
