Valsad | Gujarat — Shock and outrage swept Umbergaon after a senior revenue official was found dead on railway tracks late Monday night, sparking explosive allegations of political pressure, intimidation and a growing demand for an independent investigation into the circumstances leading to his death.
Dalpat Brahmankacha, serving as Mamlatdar of Umbergaon, was found dead near Umbergaon Railway Station late Monday night in what authorities have termed an apparent suicide. The tragic discovery has triggered intense debate across administrative and political circles, with colleagues alleging that the officer had been under severe pressure linked to a local election nomination dispute.
According to sources within the Mamlatdar office, Brahmankacha had recently faced intense demands to cancel the nomination form of an independent candidate from Sarigam. Officials familiar with the process stated that legally, there were no valid grounds to reject the nomination, placing the officer in a difficult position.
“He was caught in an impossible situation. If he followed the rules, he faced threats. If he didn’t, he would have violated the law,” said a colleague, requesting anonymity.
Multiple staff members claim the officer had expressed concerns about threats to his job if he refused to cancel the nomination. Instead of yielding to the alleged pressure, he reportedly continued to uphold procedural norms.
In the aftermath of the death, calls for a neutral and transparent probe have intensified. Colleagues and local voices are urging authorities to examine the officer’s phone call records, WhatsApp conversations and recent communications to identify whether external pressure played a role.
“There must be a thorough and impartial investigation. The truth should come out, whoever is involved,” said a staff member from the Mamlatdar office.
Local discussions have also pointed to alleged involvement of influential figures in Umargam taluka who are believed to have close ties with political and administrative circles, including individuals associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party. These claims remain unverified, and no official statement has confirmed any political link so far.
The incident has raised serious questions about the pressures faced by government officials handling election processes and the safeguards in place to protect them.
Police have initiated legal procedures and are expected to record statements from colleagues and family members as part of the investigation. Meanwhile, demands continue to grow for an independent probe to ensure accountability and transparency in the case.
