Bharuch | Gujarat — A viral video showing women performing puja inside the historic Jama Masjid Bharuch has triggered sharp reactions and heightened tensions in the city, with members of the Muslim community demanding immediate action.

The incident reportedly took place on March 3, when a group of women entered the mosque premises with flowers, fruits and prasad and were seen offering prayers. The visuals, widely circulated on social media, have since sparked outrage and protests.

Trustees and Muslim leaders gathered at the mosque soon after the video surfaced. “This is a place run strictly according to Islamic traditions. Religious activities of any other faith are not appropriate here,” a community representative said. “The sanctity and established customs of the mosque must be respected.”

The Jama Masjid, located in the heart of Bharuch city, is currently under the protection of the Archaeological Survey authorities as a heritage structure. Despite this, the site has long been at the centre of a religious dispute.

Members of the Sant Samaj claim that the structure was originally the “Samli Vihar” Jain temple and the birthplace of Chakradhar Swami, a revered spiritual figure. They argue that historical evidence supports their demand for recognition of the site’s earlier identity.

“We have been raising this issue for years,” a representative of the Sant Samiti said. “This is not a new claim. The place has deep roots in Jain history and spiritual tradition.” In the past, the group had even observed a fast to press for their demand.

Adding another layer to the controversy, allegations had earlier surfaced claiming that certain activities, including a madrasa, were being conducted inside the premises despite its protected status. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding these claims.

Following the latest development, the local administration has stepped up monitoring in sensitive areas of the city to prevent any untoward incidents. Police presence has reportedly been increased around the mosque as a precautionary measure.

“The situation is under control, but we are closely watching developments,” a senior official stated, urging citizens not to spread rumours or inflammatory content online.
