Mumbai/Thane, India – February 2026: As aquarium keeping grows from a niche pastime into a thriving community in India, The Weekend Aquarist has emerged as the country’s first dedicated aquarium hobby magazine—blending storytelling, science, and conservation. Founded in January 2025 by Amar Salvi, a corporate HR leader turned weekend editor and podcast host, the platform is redefining how Indians engage with aquatic life and responsible fishkeeping.

Launched on January 26, 2025, the publication was created to fill a gap: the lack of a serious, knowledge-driven Indian platform that connects aquarium keeping with biodiversity and learning. One year later, it celebrates its first anniversary with a growing audience of hobbyists, students, conservationists, and aquaculture professionals across India and beyond.

From Corporate Professional to Aquarium Storyteller: The Vision of Amar Salvi

Balancing a demanding corporate career with his passion for aquariums, Amar Salvi built The Weekend Aquarist as a weekend project that quickly evolved into a respected niche media platform. Through long-form magazine features and an engaging podcast, he brings together hobbyists, breeders, scientists, and conservationists for meaningful conversations on responsible fishkeeping.

The publication’s storytelling-driven approach sets it apart. Instead of focusing solely on products or trends, it highlights knowledge, learning, and the human stories behind the hobby—making it valuable for beginners while still insightful for experienced aquarists.

More Than a Hobby: Promoting Conservation, Responsible Fishkeeping & Indian Native Species

At its core, The Weekend Aquarist promotes education and environmental awareness. The magazine places special emphasis on Indian native fish species, ethical aquarium practices, and sustainable aquascaping, helping readers understand the ecological impact of their hobby.

Expert interviews, beginner-friendly guides, and visually rich storytelling make complex topics accessible to students and newcomers. As a result, the publication is gaining recognition as a trusted learning resource for the next generation of responsible aquarists who value science-backed information and ethical care.

Inside the January 2026 Anniversary Issue: Stories That Inspire and Educate

The anniversary edition reflects the platform’s commitment to immersive storytelling and conservation. Featured stories include:

  • The Tiger of Indian Rivers: A conversation with Mahseer Trust founder Steve Lockett exploring conservation challenges facing India’s iconic Mahseer species.
  • Altum Angels – From the Orinoco to the Aquarium: A journey tracing the history and husbandry of the majestic Altum Angelfish.
  • Exploring Kraken Habitat: A visual narrative on a conservation-led facility promoting biodiversity awareness and ethical animal care.

Expanding Access: Student Initiatives and Community Engagement

To mark its first anniversary, The Weekend Aquarist has introduced a Student Access Initiative offering complimentary digital access followed by affordable subscriptions. A collectible print edition with exclusive elements is also available for enthusiasts who value physical keepsakes.

Through its magazine, podcast, and digital platforms, the publication continues to build a community focused on education, responsible fishkeeping, and appreciation for aquatic ecosystems.
