Surat/Ahmedabad | Gujarat — The glittering lights of Navratri garbas dimmed under the glare of tax authorities as the GST department launched major raids on ‘Golden Navratri’ organizers in Gujarat’s two biggest cities—Surat and Ahmedabad. Acting on public complaints of open looting through overpriced passes, water, and parking fees, teams of GST officials swooped down on prominent garba venues, sparking uproar in the multi-crore garba industry.

According to officials, a joint team of more than 10 GST officers carried out the operation. “We have received credible inputs that garba organizers are charging far above the permissible rates. The investigation will determine whether they are properly registered and paying due taxes on the massive revenues being generated,” a senior GST source said.

Big-Name Garbas Under the Scanner

The raids were conducted at high-profile venues featuring Aditya Gadhvi (Rang Morlo), Jigardan Gadhvi (Swarnim Nagari Garba), Umesh Barot (Suwarna Navratri-Surat), and Purva Mantri (Suwarna Navratri-Ahmedabad). Organizers of these mega-events are being probed for discrepancies in ticket sales, season passes, and other financial transactions.

“These garba events generate crores in revenue every Navratri. If organizers are evading GST or underreporting income, strict action will follow,” said another official involved in the raids.

Organizers and Public React

The raids have sent shockwaves across the festival sector. Smaller organizers, too, are now jittery. “This action has made it clear that no one is above the law. The government is watching large financial dealings during Navratri,” said a Surat-based garba organizer who did not wish to be named.

On the public side, many expressed relief. “Passes are priced outrageously, sometimes even more than concert tickets. Finally, authorities are acting against exploitation in the name of devotion and culture,” said Bhavna Desai, a garba enthusiast in Ahmedabad.

The Bigger Picture

Garba events, especially Suvarna (Golden) Navratri, are known for their grand scale and star performers, but the glitter is often accompanied by unregulated cash flows. Officials believe the current raids could unearth significant tax evasion.

“This is just the beginning. The noose is tightening around unaccounted financial transactions during Gujarat’s most celebrated festival,” a senior GST officer remarked.
