Surat | Gujarat —–  The credibility of the Surat District Cricket Association (SDCA) has taken a severe hit after it was exposed that two 25-year-old players were fraudulently included in the Under-19 cricket tournament squad. The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), during a cross-examination of documents, uncovered the shocking age discrepancy, triggering outrage in Surat’s cricketing circles.

The scandal, described as “a betrayal of young talent,” has raised serious concerns about SDCA’s selection process and its integrity in nurturing future cricketers.

Following the investigation, the GCA has suspended both players for two years. According to cricket regulations, no player above the age of 19 can participate in an Under-19 tournament. By deliberately violating these rules, SDCA not only jeopardised the fairness of the competition but also crushed the dreams of genuine under-19 players waiting for an opportunity.

“This is nothing short of cheating,” said Rohit Mehta, a parent of an aspiring cricketer from Surat. “When genuine 16- or 17-year-olds train day and night for a chance, how can officials justify giving those slots to 25-year-olds? This is manipulation to push their loyalists forward.”

The revelation has sparked a storm of criticism against SDCA. Former players and coaches argue that this fraud was not an isolated mistake but part of a deeper malaise in the district cricket administration.

A senior cricket coach from Surat, requesting anonymity, remarked: “Such a scam cannot happen without the knowledge of SDCA officials. The question is—who signed off on these players? If the association cannot maintain transparency at the district level, how will Surat cricket ever produce national-level players?”

The scandal has already cast a shadow over Gujarat cricket’s reputation. Cricket insiders fear that if such malpractices continue, deserving talent will be sidelined, and the trust of young athletes in the system will be destroyed.

Parents and cricket enthusiasts have called for strict disciplinary action not just against the two players but also against the SDCA officials who enabled this fraud. Many believe that a probe should be launched into SDCA’s functioning, its selection panels, and its accountability mechanisms.

“This is not just about two players. It is about the credibility of an entire institution,” said a cricket enthusiast from Surat. “If officials escape responsibility, then this will keep happening again and again. We need transparency, accountability, and punishment for those responsible.”

The Gujarat Cricket Association has hinted that further inquiries may be launched into SDCA’s recent selections. If irregularities are found, penalties and suspensions could extend beyond the two players.
