What once took days or even weeks—sketching jewellery, conceptualising new ideas, or building catalogues—can now be completed in just minutes. The adoption of AI has not only accelerated production but also enhanced creativity, efficiency, and global competitiveness in the industry.

Industry experts believe the shift is nothing short of revolutionary. “It is a tough task to create new designs every day by observing old designs. But AI makes this difficulty easy. AI is able to put a superior jewellery design in front of you in minutes,” said Jayanti Savaliya, Regional Chairman of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT and specialized design apps are empowering jewellers in Surat diamond and jewellery industry. Where earlier only two or three designs could be manually prepared in a day, now a designer can produce a brand-new jewellery design in just two minutes by entering details like color, size, and gemstones. AI also generates 3D models instantly, giving jewellers and clients a clear view of the final product before production even begins.

Marketing at Lightning Speed

AI’s impact extends beyond design. In an industry where branding and presentation are critical, AI tools are helping create posters, catalogues, and social media content in record time. “Where it used to take two days to create a poster or catalogue, it is now ready in two minutes with the help of AI. Even rendering and editing, which earlier consumed two days, can be completed within minutes,” said Savaliya.

This drastic reduction in time and costs is proving to be a game-changer for both large manufacturers and small traders.

Boosting Skills, Not Cutting Jobs

Contrary to fears that automation might replace human jobs, leaders in the Surat jewellery industry insist AI complements human skills. “There is no fear of losing employment due to AI, rather it develops skills and saves time. This technology helps in selecting the best design from many and in creating marketing materials,” Savaliya clarified.

Designers agree that AI reduces repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on craftsmanship and innovation.

From Sketch to Masterpiece

Surat’s wholesale and retail jewellers are also leveraging AI to meet market demand and customer preferences for customised jewellery. Tools like Design AI and Viacom.AI can transform even a rough sketch into a photo-realistic image, complete with gemstones, lighting, and textures.

“AI creates amazing samples. I can upload a pencil sketch and in minutes, the app gives me a realistic design ready to show to my clients. This is something we could not even imagine a few years ago,” said local jewellery designer Mehul Shah.
