Viramgam (Ahmedabad) | Gujarat —The Viramgam Town Police has launched the ‘Abhay Yatri’ project under the guidance of Ahmedabad District Rural Superintendent of Police. The project was officially unveiled by District Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat and Viramgam MLA Hardik Patel, marking a new era of trust between auto rickshaw passengers and drivers.

Speaking at the launch, DSP Om Prakash Jat said, “Passenger safety is our top priority. Through this project, we want to eliminate fear and instill confidence among people who use auto rickshaws daily. Technology will act as a bridge of trust between drivers and commuters.”

How the Project Works

Under the initiative, every auto rickshaw in Viramgam will be registered with the local police station. The registration includes details of both the vehicle owner and the driver. Once registered, each auto rickshaw will display five weather-resistant stickers placed prominently on the front, back, both sides, and inside the vehicle.

Each sticker carries a QR code and a unique code number. By scanning the QR code, passengers can instantly verify the driver’s credentials and auto rickshaw details. In case scanning is not possible, passengers can note the unique code and cross-check with the police if needed.

MLA Hardik Patel emphasized the importance of this step: “The Abhay Yatri project is a significant stride towards making public transport safer. By empowering passengers with driver details, the police are setting an example for proactive governance.”

Why It Matters

The initiative aims to curb crime, theft, and harassment incidents often reported in public transport. If a crime occurs, the details of the auto rickshaw will help police trace culprits quickly. Additionally, passengers who lose belongings in an auto rickshaw can report the code number to the police, making it easier to retrieve their items.

“This project creates accountability for drivers and confidence for passengers,” noted a senior police official present at the launch. “It will also discourage unlawful activities and bring discipline within the public transport system.”

Community Reception

The launch event witnessed the participation of auto rickshaw drivers, local residents, and police officers. Many commuters welcomed the move, describing it as a much-needed step for passenger safety in smaller towns.

Local resident Meena Patel, who frequently travels by rickshaw, said, “Now I feel more secure. Knowing I can scan a code and see driver details gives me peace of mind.”

Future Prospects

The ‘Abhay Yatri’ project is being seen as a pilot model that could be replicated in other towns and cities across Gujarat. By combining digital tools with public safety, the initiative highlights how community-centric policing can foster both trust and security.
