Surat, Gujarat –  In a first-of-its-kind initiative to reinforce law and order ahead of the Muharram-Tazia festival, the Surat Police have launched a cycle patrol across sensitive areas in the city. Spearheading this move was Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Pinakin Parmar, who himself pedaled through the lanes of Zone-3, covering Lalgate, Chowk Bazaar, Singanpore, Mahidharpura, and Katargam — all considered high-sensitivity zones during the festival.

Joined by all Police Inspectors (PIs) of Zone-3, the cycle patrol aims to ensure visibility, accessibility, and agility in areas often congested with narrow bylanes and dense populations — places where traditional patrol vehicles struggle to navigate.

“Our presence should be felt not just in vehicles, but among people — in the streets, the neighborhoods, and their hearts,” says DCP Pinakin Parmar.

“This is not just about policing — it’s about creating a human connection,” said DCP Pinakin Parmar. “When officers come on bicycles and engage directly with the community, it builds trust and reassures citizens of our commitment to their safety.”

The initiative is part of a larger strategic plan by the Surat Police to enhance on-ground security, prevent untoward incidents, and encourage community participation in maintaining peace during Muharram.

Tazia Route Inspected for Smooth Passage

Alongside cycle patrols, the police conducted a detailed inspection of the entire Tazia procession route to identify and eliminate potential bottlenecks or security threats. The aim, according to officials, is to ensure that the religious procession can proceed smoothly without disruptions.

“We’ve coordinated with local leaders and peace committees,” added a senior police official. “Our goal is to uphold the city’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony.”

Connecting with the Community at Ground Level

Cycle patrols not only give officers a better feel of the local terrain, but also allow them to interact with residents, shopkeepers, and community representatives in an approachable manner. This proactive outreach is expected to defuse tensions, foster dialogue, and encourage locals to report any suspicious activities.

“Seeing senior officers like the DCP cycling through our neighborhood makes us feel secure and respected,” said Rashid Sheikh, a local shopkeeper in Chowk Bazaar. “This is real policing — with presence and heart.”

A Peaceful Muharram is the Shared Goal

As Surat prepares for one of its most emotionally significant and widely attended festivals, this initiative reflects a progressive policing approach — blending tradition with innovation, and enforcement with empathy.

“Citizens are urged to immediately contact us if they notice anything unusual. Peace is our shared responsibility,” concluded DCP Parmar.
