Ahmedabad, Gujarat – “BCCI salutes the bravery, courage and selfless service of the country’s armed forces,” declared BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia, a powerful statement that now hangs in the balance as uncertainty shrouds the presence of India’s top military brass at the IPL 2025 final tomorrow. Despite an unprecedented invitation to General Upendra Dwivedi, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, and Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, along with other service chiefs, officers, and soldiers, the highly anticipated attendance for a closing ceremony themed ‘Operation Sindoor’ remains unconfirmed. As of this evening, the suspension over their visit continues, leaving a nation to wonder if its heroes will grace the cricketing spectacle.

The cricketing world, already buzzing with the IPL 2025 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, finds itself in a holding pattern, awaiting confirmation from the highest echelons of the Indian Armed Forces. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL Governing Council extended the invitation earlier this week, aiming to honor the armed forces for their heroic efforts during ‘Operation Sindoor.’ This move was widely seen as a gesture of profound gratitude and solidarity, especially in light of the recent military conflict that briefly halted the league.

“To celebrate the success of ‘Operation Sindoor’, we have invited Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi and Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh along with other service chiefs, officers and soldiers to watch the final match of the IPL in Ahmedabad,” stated BCCI Secretary Saikia. He further elaborated, “The Army lauded the heroic efforts under Operation Sindoor, which protected and inspired the nation.”

‘Operation Sindoor,’ launched on terror camps inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that claimed 26 lives, resulted in a significant military conflict between India and Pakistan. The reverberations of this conflict were felt keenly in the sporting arena, leading to a brief suspension of the IPL 2025.

Following an announcement of a ceasefire, the IPL resumed with a rejigged schedule on May 17. The final, originally slated for May 26 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, was rescheduled to June 3 in Ahmedabad, adding another layer of complexity to the already tight arrangements.

The BCCI has consistently showcased its unwavering support for the Indian Armed Forces throughout this challenging period. Since the league’s restart, every match has begun with the solemn playing of the national anthem, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made. Furthermore, prominent messages reading ‘Thank You, Armed Forces’ have been continuously displayed on giant screens inside stadiums, reinforcing the nation’s collective appreciation.
