Surat :  In a move sparking outrage, the Gujarat government has refused to provide a relief package to traders devastated by the catastrophic fire at the Shivshakti Textile Market. The inferno, which raged for 32 hours on February 26, destroyed around 700 of the 822 shops in the market, leaving traders with losses estimated at a staggering Rs 850 crore.

Congress MLA and former Union Minister Dr. Tushar Chaudhary raised the issue in the Gujarat Assembly, demanding financial assistance for the affected traders. However, the state government rejected his plea in a written response, citing the ongoing investigation as a reason for not addressing the matter.

“Why is the government avoiding discussing the fire incident in Shivshakti Market in Surat city?” Dr. Chaudhary questioned. “The government refused to discuss it in the Gujarat Assembly, saying that the investigation is ongoing. But what about the traders who have lost their livelihoods? Will they be left to fend for themselves?”

Surat’s Textile Traders Left in Crisis

The fire at Shivshakti Market is being counted among Surat’s worst commercial disasters in recent years. It is eerily reminiscent of the 2019 Takshashila Arcade fire, which killed 22 students and had prompted promises of stricter fire safety regulations. However, little has changed since then, as traders and residents now question the government’s commitment to preventing such tragedies.

Among the heart-wrenching losses, one trader was seen pleading with officials to allow him to retrieve Rs 20 crore stored in his shop. These funds, belonging to multiple business stakeholders, were crucial for their survival. However, bureaucratic protocols prevented any such rescue attempts, leaving him to watch helplessly as the fire consumed his hard-earned fortune.

A Hub of Commerce Turned to Ashes

The Shivshakti Market was a major commercial hub in Surat’s textile sector, home to 500 shops selling sarees and other trade materials, with an additional 300 shops dedicated to packaging businesses. The fire not only destroyed merchandise worth hundreds of crores but also wiped out vital business documents, making recovery even harder for the traders.

Despite the scale of destruction, the Gujarat government has refused to commit to financial aid, leaving thousands of traders in distress. Many are now demanding government intervention, citing that their tax contributions and Surat’s economic significance to Gujarat should warrant emergency relief measures.

Lack of Accountability and Fire Safety Failures

This disaster has once again exposed the alarming lack of fire safety compliance in Surat’s commercial buildings. Many traders allege that repeated warnings about fire hazards in markets like Shivshakti were ignored. In the aftermath of the fire, there are renewed calls for strict enforcement of fire safety regulations to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.

“The government cannot simply ignore this crisis,” said a trader who lost his entire inventory. “We need help to rebuild, and the authorities must take responsibility for failing to ensure fire safety in our markets.”
