Sabarkantha : The Sabarkantha district has reported a worrying case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), with a 7-year-old child testing positive. The child, currently admitted to a private hospital in Himmatnagar, was placed on a ventilator as their condition became critical. This development has raised alarms within the state health system.

The child’s sample was collected two days ago, and the results arrived late last night, confirming the presence of HMPV. As a precautionary measure, health authorities have also collected samples from the family members of the child to test for possible spread. Meanwhile, the health department has initiated a thorough investigation and plans to screen other children in the vicinity to curb potential outbreaks.

State Health Department on High Alert

The Health and Family Welfare Department of Gujarat has been proactive in addressing the situation. A high-level meeting was convened on January 4, where the health authorities, including Chief District Health Officers (CDHO), Medical Officers of Health (MoH), Civil Surgeons, and Superintendents of Sub-District Hospitals (SDH), were directed to stay vigilant regarding HMPV cases.

To ensure readiness, the department has outlined specific measures:

Strengthening diagnostic capabilities in district hospitals, medical colleges, and civil hospitals across Gujarat.

Expediting the process of case identification and testing for HMPV.

Launching public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the virus and preventive measures.

From next week, diagnostic facilities for HMPV will be made available statewide, providing faster testing and timely treatment for affected individuals.

Understanding Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)

Human Metapneumovirus, or HMPV, is a respiratory virus first identified in 2001. It shares similarities with other respiratory illnesses such as the common cold and flu. HMPV predominantly affects young children and the elderly, especially during the winter season. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, breathing difficulties etc.

Preventive Measures for HMPV

The Gujarat Health Department has issued a set of do’s and don’ts to minimize the spread of HMPV.

What to Do:

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or handkerchief when sneezing or coughing.

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use a sanitizer.

Avoid crowded places and maintain a safe distance from people showing flu-like symptoms.

Stay home if you experience fever, cough, or respiratory issues.

Drink plenty of water, eat nutritious food, and ensure adequate sleep to boost immunity.

Ensure proper ventilation in your living environment.

Seek immediate medical attention at a government hospital if symptoms persist or worsen.

What Not to Do:

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth unnecessarily.

Refrain from sharing personal items like towels or utensils with others.

Do not self-medicate; consult a healthcare professional if symptoms escalate.

Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghvi, emphasized the government’s commitment to eliminating the threat of HMPV. “Drug pollution weakens our society, and the same applies to respiratory illnesses like HMPV. It’s crucial for the youth to understand the dangers and inform authorities if they notice symptoms,” he stated.
