Surat : The Gujarat government is reportedly considering reinstating former Surat District Collector Ayush Oak, who was suspended in May 2024 for his alleged involvement in the ₹2,000 crore Dumas land scam. The move has sparked criticism from opposition leaders, with Congress General Secretary Darshan Nayak demanding a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the case before Oak’s reinstatement.

Ayush Oak’s suspension followed accusations of approving the wrongful entry of Ganotia’s name into government land survey number 311/3 in Dumas, Surat. This land, valued at ₹2,000 crore, was allegedly transferred under dubious circumstances, leading to significant financial loss to the Gujarat government. The controversy was brought to light by a written complaint filed by MLA Tushar Chaudhary and Congress leader Darshan Naik.

In its suspension letter, the Gujarat government acknowledged the financial loss caused by Oak’s decision but has not pursued any further investigation. Moreover, the land in question has not been reclaimed by the government, raising suspicions of political pressure and involvement of land mafias. Critics argue that the case has been deliberately hushed up, leaving several questions unanswered.

Darshan Naik has filed a fresh complaint with the Prime Minister’s Office and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, highlighting the lack of accountability in the case. In his letter, Nayak alleged that no action has been taken against other individuals potentially involved in the scam, including political figures and land mafias.

“The Gujarat government has admitted to financial losses due to Ayush Oak’s decision, yet no thorough investigation has been conducted. This raises serious concerns about transparency and fairness,” Naik stated in his complaint.

Naik also emphasized that reinstating Oak without completing the investigation undermines the credibility of the administration. He called for the formation of an SIT to investigate the scam and identify all parties involved.

The Congress has demanded the constitution of a Special Investigation Team to examine the Dumas land scam comprehensively. “An SIT probe is crucial to uncover the truth behind this case. It is not just about Ayush Oak; it is about the systemic failures that allowed such a scam to occur,” said Naik.

The demand also includes withholding Ayush Oak’s reinstatement until the investigation is completed and a final report is submitted. Opposition leaders argue that reinstating the suspended officer without resolving the case sets a dangerous precedent and erodes public trust in the government.

Despite admitting to the financial loss in its suspension order, the Gujarat government has remained silent on why further investigations were not pursued. Critics allege that political pressure has led to the case being shelved, shielding those involved.
